Providing Happy Endings for So Many

It’s March, one of my favorite months in Puerto Peñasco. The weather is warmer, and the seas are calm. The pace of life at the beach quickens. March has always been a time of renewal and new beginnings in my life. It’s also the month when I begin the sometimes-difficult task of Spring cleaning. It’s one of those things we dread but ultimately embrace as the results always outweigh the cost.

As I begin this yearly ritual, I am reminded of a very different March. I was still grieving the loss of my two dogs who had crossed over the Rainbow Bridge in a single week the prior November. One was 17 years old, and the other was 14. Like many of you, I questioned whether the pain would ever go away. I wondered if I would ever be ready to add another dog to my family. I was still unsure when I sat down to write the monthly Barb’s Dog Rescue column. In preparation I generally scour Barb’s emails and her Facebook page to be sure I am aware of the most current situations and needs. Like always, there were stories of joy and stories of sadness.  In that brief time, I remembered why I had always loved volunteering at the Rescue, and most importantly why Barb does what she does. This realization led to the adoption of the two precious rescues who today bring so much happiness to my life. The joy that comes from knowing you have provided a loving home to a dog who might have experienced so little love is one of those ultimate gifts you can give yourself. Like Spring cleaning, the results always outweigh the cost.

From Sadness to Joy

Meet Max! We know little of his story before he arrived at the Rescue, but the part we do know is heartbreaking. Someone placed a lit firecracker is his mouth, blowing off part of his cheek and injuring a tooth. In great pain, Max continued his quest to survive as he roamed the streets of Caborca for several weeks. Fortunately, a Good Samaritan noticed his suffering and reached out to Barb’s Dog Rescue for help. When he arrived here Max was sent straight to our vet. His enormous wound was cleaned, disinfected and repaired. The painful tooth was removed. Max has been a much-loved resident at the Rescue for a few weeks now. Despite the horrible cruelty he has endured, Max seems to know he is safe now. He is healing well both physically and emotionally. Quite simply, Barb’s love and excellent medical care has saved him, and for that we are so grateful. Max is ready to find his forever home. He has had all vaccinations and is neutered. Those who adopt from Barb’s are provided all paperwork needed to easily take one of our dogs back across the border. Could Max’s be the story that touches your heart and reminds you of the love you have to give to one who has needed it for so long? If so, contact Barb or visit the Rescue any day between 10 am and 2 pm.

And finally, our sincere thanks to all of you who have taken the time to come visit us at the Rescue. You have helped in a multitude of ways. Every adoption from Barb’s is critical as it opens up much needed space for other dogs who need our care. In times of trouble your donations have helped us provide the expert medical care some of our dogs desperately need. We can’t thank you enough if you have helped us transport dogs to owners in the U.S. or donated dog food, cleaning supplies, puppy pads, gently used towels, blankets or dog beds. The impact of your generosity is felt every day, and we cannot say thank you enough. Your generosity of spirit will do your part in creating an ultimate happy ending for the sweet souls who make Barb’s Dog Rescue their temporary home. They can’t wait to meet you!
