Human Kindness on Display during Health Crisis

Humans by nature tend to dwell on the negative and forget to focus on the positive putting much of that needed optimism on the back burner. During every crisis there are many positive human-interest stories that occur but will not get noticed because the attention is focused on the negative.

In this current sea of negativity, it’s important to remember that there are many positive aspects of this health epidemic. For example, we are spending more time with our families which we normally can’t do. Many of us are praying more and developing a closer relationship with God unlike before.  Another example are the stories of kindness and compassion by ordinary citizens determined to help others. This crisis has brought out the best in most people here in Puerto Peñasco so here are some examples of kindness.

This pandemic has caught us all off-guard, but some community members and business owners stood in solidarity against the virus with the purpose of supporting vulnerable families in Puerto Peñasco with the delivery of pantry items, food, construction materials and clothing. This group also donated medical supplies to include ventilators, an isolation chamber, toiletries, soap, face masks and other medical items so families and the medical community can properly react and respond to the epidemic.

This community effort to help the underprivileged families and the medical sector included over 4000 pantry packages to poor families, over 1 ton of fresh fish, 20,000 facemasks to the health center, hundreds of cakes and pastries, over 10 tons of potatoes, 1000 of liters of disinfectant gel, 20 gallons of bleach and 5 respirators and an isolation chamber. This response is not only impressive but says a lot about the culture of Puerto Peñasco where human kindness and compassion are on the minds of all.

Another positive story is the owner of Mickey’s Place, Chef Mickey, who provided free meals in the lower parts of the barrio where people can’t afford a meal during this crisis. They first setup on Sinaloa and Fremont and took care of many people there. Then they picked up their equipment and went into the barrios and fed people. Chef Mickey said that is where they really need the help and that he couldn’t have done this without the many people who donated the food to make this all possible.

Chef Mickey said he would like to do more for the community. He says business is closed and everybody is suffering. but he says if we all come together, we can help people out. He said it provides him peace of mind at night when you are enjoying a hot meal with your family that you can say you helped others enjoy a hot meal also today. Donations are welcome such as beans, chorizo, eggs and tortillas and Chef Mickey says together we will get through all of this.
