July 2026 has brought us a new board of directors and new leadership to our Rotary Club. Lucy Bustamante is our new president, and she has hit the ground running! Many of you know Lucy because you’ve been a client at Lucy’s Spa…next time you see her, thank her for her tremendous leadership of the Puerto Peñasco Rotary Club!
We are already planning the Polio Plus Dinner, which will take place on October 15th, so mark your calendars. There will be more information forthcoming about the location, but it looks like it will now be at Las Palomas, but maybe inside and not outside. When we secure the contract, there will be more details forthcoming. The Polio Plus Dinner is an annual event and a worldwide Rotary mission…it is important to keep polio dormant!
We are launching a large membership drive this year because we need more individuals to complete the service we want to accomplish in Rocky Point. If you have any interest whatsoever, please let me know; we would love to make you a part of our Rotary family…it is a fantastic group of people…real doers!
We are anxiously awaiting a visit from our district governor; he will be in Peñasco on July 29th. His visit gives us an opportunity to show him some of the work and some of the projects that are a result of Rotary involvement. We will be touring the water plant, the dialysis center, and presenting the prosthetics initiative.
Our club recently donated money to Fundación Oncológica Integral Unidas Dejando Huellas, an organization in town that supplies women who have suffered from a mastectomy. We contributed money for the purchase of prosthetic bras and presented these to the women. The women who live in our community who are diagnosed with breast cancer must travel at least five hours for treatment, many on the bus. In November, if not sooner, we plan to have a special bingo benefit to raise funding for these bus trips. The American Legion has so graciously approved us to use their facility to host this event…thank you, Danny, Mike, and Bob; your willingness to help in this effort is greatly appreciated. There will be more details about this special bingo night forthcoming.
We have several other projects in the pipeline; we plan to do the vision clinic in February and hopefully will provide glasses to over 300 people. We also want to center on the needs of our elementary schools and have created a form so they can tell us what their needs are…and the list goes on and on. Hopefully everybody has suffered through the dog days of summer and will be back in Rocky Point with a renewed spirit to improve the quality of life for everybody. I am really excited about this year, and I’m encouraged that our Rotary club can do our little part to make our community a better place to live.
