A long time ago, prior to retiring, I was a substitute teacher at our local Junior High School. One day, I got a call from my other half asking if I could come outside. She wanted me to meet “Zoey”. My exact words were “What’s a Zoey?” Somewhere inside, I thought – ut oh this is not going to be good.

Recess was taking place, so I could easily escape to the parking lot. There, in the back of the pickup truck, was a Boxer dog, whose name was apparently Zoey. Next thing I knew, Zoey promptly jumped over the side of the truck and onto the school grounds, into the crowd of kids. Right then, I’m sure I did that scene from Home Alone with my hands going to the side of my face, and my mouth open. Of course, the kids LOVED it, I HATED it! After corralling her back to the truck, I told them both, “You need to leave – NOW!”

We had Zoey for 10 years, and she was one of the best dogs we’ve owned. So, it came as no surprise when recently in Puerto Peñasco, my other half called me again and said, “I’m on my way home, and I want you to meet ‘Buddy.” I told her I didn’t want to meet Buddy, but to no avail. Upon driving up to the house, I saw what appeared to be another Boxer mix in the back seat of the car. As we already had two small dogs at home (a very bonded pair), I was not thrilled with the idea of having another dog. I was told that this dog was found out in the middle of nowhere, as most strays here are. He was skinny and smelled like he could use a bath or two! What that dog must have thought when he was picked up, brought to a strange place, and immediately put in a shower! What our dogs must have thought when this big, smelly dog walked into our house!

Fast forward >> Buddy is now living large in the United States, where we are told his favorite place is the couch, and his pet sister loves playing with him! Great ending!!

While there are plenty of strays here, I also know that there are organizations here that do their best to help dogs and cats find their forever homes. I’d encourage you to keep this in mind and donate if possible. They can always use towels, cleaning supplies, dog food, and, of course, monetary assistance.

Speaking of donations, even if you can’t donate one of the above, one thing you can do, and please encourage your friends to do this as well…if you are travelling through Why, be sure to stop at the Why Not Travel Store and pick up a bag of FREE dog food for Barb’s Dog Rescue. Since both are on the way to Rocky Point, it just takes a few minutes, but it makes a big difference for our furry friends. You are allowed one bag, you don’t have to pay anything at the border, and the folks at both the store and Barb’s will help you load and unload. Win, Win.

Nothing for me to guess this time, just to say – have a good day and check the back seat of your car or truck each day!
