Happy Mother’s Day! If you’re lucky enough to still have your mom around, I hope she is as fun and awesome as mine was. If my mom were still here she would be bummed that Mother’s Day in Mexico and the U.S. falls on the same day this year since she always loved to claim two. Truth be known, her birthday was on the 29th, so she considered May “her” month. If you knew her, pretty much every month was “hers”. We all miss you, Sandra Jo! Hope you are able to treat your Mom to a special weekend here in Rocky Point.

If you’re new to town – welcome and Bienvenido! May is a super month down here as the weather is pure perfection and the events are non-stop. The entire month is always busy, and Memorial Day Weekend is on steroids. The following weekend will be super busy as well since Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers have moved their annual music fest, Circus Mexicus to May this year instead of June. Tons of musical artists perform all around town, from the AM to the PM for four days. Tickets are super cheap compared to concert ticket prices in the U.S. and there isn’t a bad seat in the house! You can actually afford to come down, even with higher gas prices, because tickets to the main events are inexpensive and there is lots of free music offered at a lot of local establishments. Peñasco also has a lot of free things you can do and one of the best, least expensive activities is a sunset cruise on the pirate ship Rey del Mar. It’s actually a show, cruise and lots of fun for kids and adults alike. We also have a lot of inexpensive places to stay and eat. Yes, we do have “fine dining prices” at some restaurants, but you usually get much more than you pay for, and the cost of your entire meal is still tons less than similar eats in Scottsdale, Tucson or San Diego. If you’re on a budget and you’ve read, or heard, that you can’t eat on the cheap here in Rocky Point, they are flat out lying to you! How does the saying go…Tell me you’ve never really “been” to Peñasco without telling me you’ve never really “been” to Peñasco. You don’t even have to go off the beaten path to get some fantastic prices, daily specials and great happy hours. Never hesitate to ask a local for a few recommendations.

I’m very excited that we are featuring a new article by Puerto Peñasco’s Secretary of Tourism, Martin Martinez. It will be great – and a nice change – to get official city news, updates, stats, and events in real time. It’s a much-needed communication channel that we’ve been asking for since 1991 and long overdue so, muchas gracias Martin! And speaking of…in his article this month he says that the city has implemented new guidelines requiring a city permit (free) to hold an event on the beach – so check it out.

Don’t forget about Head Out to Rocky Point Shuttle if you don’t want to hassle with traffic or driving over the holiday weekend or during Circus Mexicus this month, or any time for that matter. They offer door-to-door service, it’s super convenient, AND you don’t have to wait in that super long line getting out of Mexico. I’ve actually ridden with Lynelle, owner of Head Out many times to and from the city/Rocky Point over the years and it’s always a fun and relaxing trip, not to mention super informative. Lynelle was a Rocky Point visitor eons before she started Head Out and I think her knowledge of the entire area is rivaled only by Sr. Munro. She probably surpasses him north of the border – plus she has lots of fun tales and always stops at KM13 for Circus Mexicus revelers (IYKYK). Head Out to Rocky Point Shuttle has many passenger vans and drivers so you’re not guaranteed to get Lynelle, but you’ll thank me if you do. Happy Mother’s Day Lynelle – hope they give you a day off 😊

Remember that our Lukeville/Sonoyta border is open until 10PM every Friday and normal operating hours, every other day of the week, are 6AM to 8PM. Drive safe!

Happy Mother’s Day and a very Happy May to everyone! See you at the beach.
