From Street to Second Chance: How Fostering Saves Lives in Puerto Peñasco

When visitors come to Rocky Point, they often notice the dogs. Some are owned. Some are community dogs. Some are surviving the best they can. What many people do not see is what happens behind the scenes when someone says yes.
Recently, Matthew and Erin saw a mother dog struggling to survive with her seven puppies. They did not look away. They ensured the mother was safely spayed so she would never face another exhausting pregnancy. Then they opened their home and fostered the puppies, giving them safety during the most vulnerable weeks of their lives.
Later, Khristy stepped in and continued fostering, carrying the responsibility forward so the puppies could keep growing in a home environment.
Because of three people, seven dogs will have homes.
That is the power of fostering.
Fostering is not adoption. It is temporary, structured, and supported. For rescue organizations like ours, fosters are the bridge between the street and a forever family.
When puppies stay in a shelter environment too long, they miss critical socialization. In a home, they learn everyday sounds. They learn how to rest peacefully. They learn that humans are safe. They begin to trust. That foundation makes them healthier, more adaptable, and far more likely to succeed in their permanent homes.
Fostering also saves lives in a very practical way. Every time a foster family opens a space in their home, it opens space in the shelter. That means another dog can be sterilized. Another emergency can be helped. Another family can receive support. Fostering multiplies impact.
For tourists who spend part of the year here, fostering can fit beautifully into your time in Rocky Point. Some families foster for a few weeks. Some help with medical recovery after spaying or neutering surgery. Some care for puppies until transport north. The commitment is flexible, but the impact is lasting.
Seven puppies will grow into companions, hiking partners, children’s best friends, and quiet comfort during hard days. They will change the lives of the people who adopt them.
But it began with something simple.
Matthew and Erin said yes.
Khristy said yes.
If you have ever felt moved when you see a dog here, fostering may be your yes.
