During inauguration of a park and gym, bearing the name of Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada, and unveiling of a plaque honoring the World Champion boxer from Puerto Peñasco, Mayor Kiko Munro addressed Estrada by stating, “Only you know what it took to get your name engraved on this plaque; as someone who strives for something does more than one who simply can, and when you have dreams and goals and set out to achieve them, you go after them despite any obstacle.”
Accompanied by Gallo’s trainer Alfredo Caballero, along with renowned professional boxers, together with presidents and trainers from boxing leagues, the mayor emphasized that Puerto Peñasco now offers athletic and recreational facilities to truly benefit athletes and families.
Terencio Gutiérrez Valenzuela, Coordinator of Public Projects, stated that $2,705,450 pesos were invested into the Gallo Estrada Park and Gym, which will benefit over 10,000 people. He explained the traditional gym space now includes a duly equipped park with a peripheral running track, synthetic grass, a children’s playground, open-air gym, bleachers, basketball court, restrooms, and locker rooms.
In moving words, world champion boxer Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada thanked Mayor Kiko Munro for the efforts of his administration in dignifying this important athletic space, which will continue to develop grand talents both in boxing and other disciplines.
El Gallo remarked, “There are many kids who have the drive, and facilities such as this will motivate them. For me, living just two blocks from here, this was just a court in poor condition, and now it bears my name. I am very pleased, proud, and very happy for all that has been done for children and the community.”
He added, “Just as Jonathan (Oros), my former trainer says, this is a rough neighborhood and hopefully this space will last. Hopefully people will care for it, for the benefit of all the children. I am motivated that it is named after me and for kids to excel just as El Gallo Estrada, whether in boxing or other sports.”
Moments later, Mayor Kiko Munro together with Juan Francisco “Gallo” Estrada unveiled the plaque formally inaugurating the athletic facility named in honor of Puerto Peñasco’s boxing pride.
