The Three Amigos, Jeff, Pat, and I, were on another Puerto Peñasco fishing trip. The group had set up my toy hauler camper before, so it didn’t take long to make camp. We quickly unloaded the garage, and got the kayaks, BBQ grill, smoker, fire pit, EZ UP shade, and fish cleaning station in place for a few days of Fall fly fishing. After assembling our fly-fishing gear at Playa D Oro RV Park, we drifted over to the Pit for fish and shrimp tacos and a cold Indio.

One of the fun things about Puerto Peñasco is the cantinas with live music. On Friday nights, the house band Linger plays at Borracho’s Cantina; they do a good job on Rock and Roll songs and slip in enough salsa music to keep it spicy. In the Fall, there are football and baseball games to watch on the big screen TVs, and the food is excellent.

The next morning, I am enjoying a cup of coffee and a bagel. Quickly, the Amigos are in the truck and headed to the marina at first light, around 7:00 AM. High tide hits at about the same time, so we have a long outgoing tide. The marina is a good place to launch a pontoon boat or a kayak. Good, hard-packed sand and plenty of room, you can back right up to the water to launch your boat. There is a paved parking lot above the launch area, and a restroom when you come off the water. The outgoing tide takes us past the Malecon, The Point, past Manny’s, and past Mirador Beach. It’s a mild tide, so we can head back anytime we choose. Some days, we would wait for the tide to change to take us back to the marina.

On the water, we caught a nice variety of fish: Grunt, Cabrilla, Grouper, and Orange Mouth Corvina. The Orange Mouth is a prized catch because they don’t have a fishy taste. They taste like what you season them up with. I like to use a white wine, butter, and capers sauce to grill the Orange Mouth. If it’s a really good catch day, I’ll smoke some and invite some of the neighbors from the Trailer Park over for dinner. Another fun thing to do is clean and fillet the fish and ask one of the local cantinas to fry or grill the fish with some sides. It’s one way to avoid clean up duty after dinner.

October, November, and even December is pleasant enough to wet wade and enjoy the water temperature. Plan your fishing trip now before it gets cold and the fishing slows down.
