Rocky Point is no stranger to “first time events” so it was just the time for circle track racing to make the scene.  The new track, Thunder on the Beach Raceway, is located out on Sandy Beach behind the Reef R.V. Park.  It is positioned down in a large excavation with the surrounding banks, perfect for spectators.  The view of the track was excellent at any location.  There were many vendors for food, drink and souvenirs.  The spectators brought EZ ups for shade and relaxed in their folding chairs.  An Ambulance was positioned in the center of the track accompanied by an off-road sand rail Rescue unit, fully equipped, including a backboard mounted on the front!

Rocky Point’s mayor, Alejandro Zepeda, came to see the start of the event and meet the drivers.  Driver Bobby Marcum, from Camp Verde, AZ talked Mayor Zepeda into getting in the driver’s seat of his Sprint Car.  The Mayor was a little hesitant but he eventually got in and hooked up the seat belts.  Lots of pictures were taken, then it was time to get out….it seems the racing seat didn’t want to let go of his hips right away.  With a little effort he climbed out.

After a short drivers meeting, the different divisions went out and put on an exhibition of their machines and their driving skills.  Due to a race in the states on Saturday night, the amount of race cars that showed up was a disappointment.  Hoping for additional racers to arrive early Sunday morning, drivers were looking forward to more racing on Sunday.  Quite a few people came out to support the first race and hear the engines Roar.  In talking with the drivers afterward, they liked the track, especially the length.  They say it is about 1/3 mile with just the right amount of banking.

Bob Livingston, owner of Thunder Raceway in Show Low, AZ is the person responsible for putting this track and event together.  I’m sure he had help from like minded racers who want to bring more visitors to Rock Point to help the economy.  Max Sadler #32 and Bob Livingston #76 were here representing the UMP Modified.  Sandy Mathews #96, Tim Jones #79, Casey Cain #6 and Mike Breton #61 brought the Dwarf cars and ran several heat races.

More races are in the future, including a Lucas Oil off road Truck race early in 2012.   For more information about upcoming racing in Rocky Point, go to http://www.thunderonthebeach.mx.
