Barb’s Dog Rescue has been situated in the very same location since way back in 2001, and from the very beginning, we’ve been wrapped in the loving arms of the people and the businesses that make Rocky Point so incredibly special. For over two decades, our billboard along the highway has served as a marker welcoming travelers to town and reminding them that just off the highway sits a place that is home to over 400 dogs, all rescued from the streets of Puerto Peñasco, the border town of Sonoyta, and other parts of Northern Sonora. Founded by our hero Barbara Mumaugh, the rescue has grown from a handful of very lucky dogs and the work of one tenacious woman, to what it is today – a sprawling campus where dogs enjoy congregate living, more than 20 employees, and one of the most heartwarming experiences you’ll ever enjoy. We love visitors!
Our growth through the years has resulted in a community of dog-loving businesses, residents, and travelers rallying around our mission and our work. We’ve been invited to host adoption events at venues all around our city, many restaurants have honored Barb’s with drink specials named after Barb herself, and donations of supplies, food, and all things “dog” are welcomed from neighborhoods stretching from Las Conchas to Sandy Beach. It’s common for community-centered foundations to host fundraisers benefiting Barb’s Dog Rescue…from pickleball to yoga, proceeds from these activities often benefit our organization; how cool is that?!
Our work takes abandoned, suffering dogs off the streets and gives them a chance to heal their broken bodies and their hearts while they patiently wait for their perfect human match to welcome them into their homes. Our city recognizes that not only is this good for these precious dogs; it’s good for business and tourism. Barb’s Dog Rescue is grateful for the support we receive locally, and we love this town and its people!
We must make mention of the impact our partnership with the Why Not Travel Store in Why, AZ has had on our public exposure! Mexican law dictates that dog food (which we procure mostly in the USA) can only cross the border 50 lbs. at a time (canned food, five cases at a time), per vehicle. This rule has made food transport a little tricky, to say the least. But…the Why Not Store has come to our rescue (pun intended!), allowing food to be safely stored in one of their storage units, so that travelers can stop by, gas up, grab snacks, and load up 50 lbs. of food for delivery to Barb’s Dog Rescue. Our purchased food is safely stored with them, and travelers that have more than 50 lbs. to donate to the dogs can drop the extra there, for other kind-hearted, dog-loving people to bring down. The result? We have hundreds of people who, as they roll into town, make it a point to stop and drop off a bag of food. They see what we’re doing, they give love to the dogs, and they tell their friends. A large majority of our visitors, supporters, and adopters become fans and donors as a result of the bag of dog food they picked up at the Why Not Travel Store!
We’re honored to be a part of this kind community, and with your support, we’ll continue working tirelessly to save the defenseless, innocent street dogs of Rocky Point. Barb’s Dog Rescue…the house that love built.
