Prior to living full-time in Rocky Point, I lived in the White Mountain area of Arizona. It is a beautiful country, full of big trees and a lot of little lakes.

So, after all the hubbub of moving settled down, it was time to get back to some fun hobbies…fishing being one of them. Not knowing the area very well, I turned to a local expert…Facebook… to find out who I could talk to about equipment and secret spots “to land the big one”. After spending nearly $300 USD on poles, line, tackle, etc., I was told a good place to go was off the old cruise ship pier by Wrecked at the Reef. What I wasn’t told was that July was not a good time to go! Picture it in your mind. You have to park, what seems like a mile away, in the Wrecked at the Reef parking lot. Don’t try the RV lot; we were chased off. With poles, tackle box, and cooler in hand, my partner and I set off. I should step back here and explain that Traci is 2 weeks post-knee replacement surgery. Not our brightest move! After crawling, tripping, and mountain climbing over the pier, we had just enough energy to cast once or twice! I should also mention that it was one of those windy, blow-your-hat-off kind of days. That was not discovered until we had trekked to the top of the pier! Add the 90+° hot temperature, and right about now, we were thinking that Pesca en Mexico is not our thing!

Having no fun at all, we decided to head back. As tough as the climb up was, coming down was worse! I became the equipment hauler as Traci had to be very careful with her knee! We literally had to sit down at the bottom to catch our breath. The walk back to the car took forever, as heat stroke set in. No exaggeration…every step we took was a great effort. We stopped 3 times, drained all the water we brought, and finally made it back! It’s funny, I’ve been there several times since and looked at the pier and thought that’s not far…haha. Add insult to injury, when we were walking back, one of the waiters at Wrecked asked us why we didn’t just fish on their beach, as everyone else does! That was a very good question!

Lesson learned…fishing in July is not ideal; climbing a rocky pier after surgery is not smart; and fishing on the beach would have been much easier!

Not ones to be defeated, I do have other “fish stories”, but those will have to wait. I think I’ve exceeded my space allotment for this month!

¡Hasta Luego!
