Every time I attend one of our weekly Rotary meetings, it refreshes my thinking. The second item on our agenda, each week, after the Pledge of Allegiance, is a four-way test. The Rotary four-way test goes like this, and it relates to the things we think, say, or do when we are planning a project or discussing a direction, we want our club to go…We always ask these four questions: 1. Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships and 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned? The projects that we move forward on must have passed this test. We combine the four-way test with our Rotary vision statement that goes like this…“together we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe in our communities and in ourselves”. After visiting both of these statements, it is easy to see why Rotary projects are such good ones.
Now I want to give you some examples of such projects: assisting with the opening of the dialysis center was so worthwhile, and now we are working with Limbs for Humanity /a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in the states committed to fitting prosthetics for those who cannot afford them. Just since January of 2026, there have been 50 people served in this capacity. These individuals now have artificial limbs. This has occurred through donations of time, money, and used prosthetics. It is our goal, working with Randy and David of Limbs for Humanity to create a world where every amputee has the opportunity to walk, run, and play with dignity and independence. Our Rotary club is writing a global grant asking for $85,000 from Rotary International to help support this effort. The ultimate goal is to be able to manufacture these prosthetics locally. This is a huge undertaking that will involve many partners along with several volunteers, but isn’t it a worthwhile goal that definitely passes the four-way test?
Our club also recently wrote a small grant, which provided $1000 from the Rotary Foundation, of which we coupled with $1000 from our club. The $2000 will be used to buy prosthetic bras for women who have suffered from a mastectomy. Once again, working on improving the life of individuals in our community.
Our Rotary club continues to affiliate with clubs around the world. A group of Rotary members and students from Utah will once again be spending their spring break here in Puerto Peñasco building houses. It is always a fun time to work with these young people as they display their service above self. Instead of spending their spring break just lying on a beach, they are spending their spring break building a house for a less fortunate family.
There are so many aspects of Rotary that make it such a great organization. I have had the awesome opportunity to meet Rotarians from all over the world, and they are such great people. Maybe it’s because they practice the four-way test and the Rotary vision statement in their everyday life, but whatever it is I’m proud to be one.
If anyone’s interested in knowing more about our service organization, come have breakfast with us on Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock. All of the details are in the bottom of this article. Service above itself what a great way to live Dr. Sally.
