Best time to catch fish in Puerto Peñasco is now! Spring! Drop those unimportant yard work and home maintenance projects and plan a fly-fishing trip to Puerto Peñasco. The extra warm winter caused an accelerated spring bite. Good anglers are catching 40-60 fish per day at La Pinta on an outgoing tide. Many are having personal best fishing days. Even the unlucky anglers who normally are fish less were catching 20 fish per day! You know who you are.
I hosted a Desert Fly Caster Outing at the end of March we caught a lot of fish. One day, we kept fish, cleaned them, and dropped them off at The Salt & Lime Restaurant. They made Ceviche for an appetizer, and fried fish with a panko crust from our catch. It was delicious, fresh fish is sooo good, and they prepared some sides as well. It turned out to be an inexpensive meal, for the 11 guests, the service was great, and I didn’t have to clean up at the end of the evening.
By the time you read this story in May, the fishing will be epic! Huge bait balls of minnows will be attacked by birds, and larger fish will attack from the bottom. Just get your Clouser Minnow in the water, and you will probably catch a fish. You may need to hide your fly when not in use! Be careful not to let a fly attached to your rod and reel dangle into the water while your attention is on taking a photo or straightening gear. Many times, an unattended rod has been pulled off a kayak or pontoon boat by a hungry fish!
There are so many great places to eat in Puerto Peñasco, it’s impossible to get around to them all, but here a short list of favorites that we had time to visit this trip La Curva, Pane e Vino, Duke’s, Max’s, Pink Cadillac, Salt & Lime, Oyster Bar, The Pit Bar, and Beach Bum Bar & Coffee. There are about 100 more places that are great and that deserve a mention. We will be back…hungry!
