The Nuñez Salgado family came to Puerto Peñasco from Acapulco, Guerrero five years ago. Hurricanes and constant rains, including a 7.1 magnitude earthquake, caused significant damage to their home in Acapulco, forcing them to relocate. The family came to Puerto Peñasco searching for work and a better life for their three children. While the lack of finances has kept the family from getting into a home of their own, through the generous support of the Heber Valley Rotary Club of Utah, the Wasatch High School Interact Club, and Homes of Hope, the family was approved to receive a home of their own.

A handful of high school students along with members of the Heber Valley Rotary Club joined with the Puerto Peñasco Rotary Club and Centro Communitario Palabras de Esperanza to build a home for the family in need. “It is difficult to express my gratitude to you. This is an opportunity of a lifetime for us,” said the new homeowner.
“Funds to purchase materials came from generous contributions of residents and businesses in the Heber Valley,” said Dave Barrus, Heber Valley Rotary Member.
With only three days to build a home, the students learned how to frame, use power tools, put up walls, install windows, run electrical and install roofing with the help their jobsite manager, Juan Buganda from Homes of Hope. “This is our big international project that we prepare all year long for. It’s great that we can help a family in need,” said Wasatch High School senior and Interact Club member, McKell Brosnahan.
The students are part of Interact, a Rotary sponsored youth organization that focuses on “Service Above Self.” Everyone welcome to join our meetings – see the Events Page for more info.
