Good things happen on a family fishing trip. Some of the digital distractions go away for a while. It’s easier to slow down and notice nature while fishing on the lake. Listen to the call of the loon, the whippoorwill, and even the quiet conversation of neighbors talking quietly across the lake. The grandkids get to fish off the dock, operate the boat, and go kayaking.
I still get excited about fly fishing trips with family and friends. Setting the date, selecting a target fish, the anticipation of the next adventure, checking on details, like weather, and whether the fish are hungry, leads to phone conversations and texts. Getting as much information as possible, ahead of the trip, is a good plan.
In addition to the numerous fly fishing trips to Puerto Peñasco, and some long-distance trips during the year, but I always look forward to fly fishing with the grandkids and other family members at the cabin on the lake in Northern Wisconsin. A vacation on the lake is a good escape from Arizona summer heat, and that is always a good idea.
The grandkids have been catching bass, crappie, small pike, and blue gill in the lake for as long as they can remember. It’s a good opportunity to leave them with good memories. My kids still talk about memorable fishing and camping trip adventures when they were the age the grandkids are now. Each year, the grandkids have improved their casting and fish-playing ability. I am hoping they can watch a well-placed popper being inhaled by a large bass or pike and then have an epic battle and land a trophy fish.
Along with all of the good outdoor activities, the evening card and board games cause some side-splitting laughs and jokes. The food tastes better after being outdoors all day, plus everyone has made a list of their favorite menu item. Grilling, smoking, and, of course, the big fish fry are a culinary treat to look forward to.
The fishing gets even better in June in Puerto Peñasco, a good place for a family fishing trip. I hope you can take some time to get with your family and friends for a little fish therapy.
