Welcome to Rocky Point – lucky you-you’re here in November, when outside temps are gorgeous, the water is still warm enough to enjoy, and evenings are perfect for sitting around a beach fire – heaven!

November is also a great time to pay us a visit! The desert sun is a little gentler, and taking a stroll around the rescue is a comfortable, heart-warming experience. Many of you make it a point to stop by when you’re in town (thank you!), but we’d love for you to see our entire operation and introduce you to the dogs that live beyond the front gates – come and take a tour of our campus, meet our team, and see it all – you’ll be dazzled!

We receive oodles of phone calls and emails with questions about our work, so we thought this month we’d take time to answer some of the ones that are most frequently asked. We hope you’ll enjoy, and maybe even learn a little about what we do here in Mexico!

“Where are you located?” We are just off of Highway 8 – look for the big, yellow billboard just before you cross the bridge heading into town…the one that says, “Dog Food Needed” (and that is the truth – we definitely always need it). We’re about one block off the highway, a super easy stop!

“What are your hours?” We are open to the public every day of the year…weekends and holidays included, from 10 am-4 pm. If you’re here for Thanksgiving or any other holiday, come spread some joy to the dogs…and our staff!

“How do I adopt a dog from Barb’s Dog Rescue?” The best way is to come and see us, of course! You can also begin your search online by clicking on the “adopt a dog” link on our website, where you’ll see a bio for each of our dogs. If you see one that melts your heart, call us or send us an email to learn more about the dog, receive additional photos, etc. Our social media pages are also a great way to learn more about our dogs who are ready for adoption – read the stories, fall in love, and call or email us for more information! Our pre-adoption process is focused on becoming acquainted with you and learning more about your home, yard, lifestyle, other pets, and more. This is done by utilizing a series of questions that we ask using our adoption application, but we take great pride in emphasizing conversation-based exchanged to help determine perfect matches for our dogs and our adoptive families.

“What are your adoption fees?” Our Mexico dogs need homes, and that is the priority – we do not have an established adoption fee for our Mexico babies, but very much appreciate your donations when you adopt a dog from BDR in Rocky Point. We are funded by donations – we have no government or corporate grants, and your donations help us continue to do what we do – save, heal, vet, and find homes for dogs. We sometimes have wonderful adopters whose funds are limited and that’s ok. Other times, we’ll have adopters who will make astoundingly generous donations to our cause when they adopt, and they mean the world to us.

“How many dogs do you have at the rescue?” Our rescue consists of about four acres of doggie goodness, and at any given time we are home to 400-450 dogs, all saved from the streets of Puerto Peñasco and surrounding communities. We adopt hundreds of dogs out each year, but for every one that leaves for their happily ever after, there’s another one that needs to be saved. We are always at full capacity.

“If we adopt a dog from Barb’s Dog Rescue, what is the process to bring him/her over the border?” Great question! We give you everything you need to bring your new pet back to the United States – vaccine and microchip documentation, harnesses and leashes, a blanket or dog bed if you need it, and a starter supply of food. We’ll walk you through completing the CDC import form (this must be completed by the adopter) and provide you with a screw worm certificate.

“What is your biggest need?” If it has to do with dogs, we need it! Food is of course the biggest priority (dry & canned; chicken is best. We also need toys, beds, treats, harnesses, leashes, and collars, cleaning supplies, potty pads, etc. We go through sheets, towels, and blankets like crazy, so next time you’re cleaning out your linen closet, please think of us!

“What kind of dog is this? How big do you think they’ll get?” All of our dogs who are ready for adoption are listed on our website, and we’ll do our best to help estimate breed, size, etc., but you want to know the truth?  We’re guessing! We lovingly refer to our dogs as Mexi-Mixes…a very special breed!

“Do you need volunteers?” We always need them. Surprisingly, we don’t have many, but gosh, we sure would love to have them! If you’d like to spend a little time with our dogs, just come on down! Traveling with a group? We can put all of you to ‘work!’ From treat-giving to helping prepare food and meds, we will match you with a job you’ll love!

“We’ve heard there’s a Barb’s Dog Rescue in AZ. Is that true?” Yes, it’s true! Our dogs in Mexico need more exposure to families who can give them loving forever homes, and that’s exactly what Peoria is doing for them. Not everyone travels to Mexico, so having an adoption center in the Valley has been a game changer – nearly 300 dogs adopted from AZ during our first year – WOW!
