The “dog days” of August are here, but events and happenings are humming at the post.  Our volunteers are kicking butt on the renovations at Casa Hogar and donations for the replacement flooring (to help keep the residents from tripping on the old and raised tiles) have been coming in. We could always use more donations to help our elderly in the community. As you are aware, the post is donating $100 every month to Casa Hogar for food and such, but donations of clothing, blankets, etc. are always welcome.

Zay’s Western Bar (shout out to Chris Ortega and Laura Neal) is working to help Casa Hogar as well, providing much needed material and labor to effect repairs to the plumbing, electrical and air conditioning system.

As I’ve written before, at the American Legion here in Peñasco, we don’t just ‘throw money’ at charities. We also get our hands dirty (well, at least some of us do). So, please, if you want to help out with either a donation of money, food, clothing or have a skill, please donate!

If you’ve wanted to make such donations but didn’t know where or how…bring your donations to the post, and we’ll be sure to get your donations to the needy here in town.

After all is said and done, we at American Legion Post 15 are members of the community and we have the ability to help our less fortunate residents, so if you are just visiting, a part time or permanent resident, please consider donating your unwanted or gently used items to help your neighbors.

The July 4th celebration at the post was well attended and lots of fun was had by all.  Of course, with the hot and humid weather, attendance at post events is flagging just a bit, but Bingo, Karaoke and Trivia contests are still on the menu and the A/C is cold, so stop in by for a drink or two and enjoy the cool, and the company! The pool (billiards) team is still going strong, and they play other bars and clubs regularly. That schedule will follow.

If you are a cigar aficionado, a group of our members have started a club called Cigars and Booze (self-explanatory, isn’t it?) and they have a meeting at Manny’s every Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. to smoke stogies, drink and tell lies(?). I don’t really know about the lie telling…but one can assume. So, if you enjoy a good cigar along with a cool libation, or smoke and just want to spend some time with other American Legion members, this is your chance! Also heard around the post was that the new bowling alley has a ‘cigar’ room, so that that might become a thing. The bowling alley only opens a 3 p.m. so stay tuned.
