Hello April! You may be aware that it has been difficult for me to get timely updates and information on upcoming Legion events, but that is about to change. Bee Murphy has taken over the committee which plans and promotes events at the post. She and I have had a meeting of the minds, so to speak, and she has promised to keep me current on everything the post is doing, ahead of my monthly deadline! Thanks Bee!

On that note, and as I have written before, because this column is being viewed in April, the event that I am writing about actually was to take place in March…so here goes…Peñasco’ s own dance troupe, Ballet Folklorico Pinacate, won first place in an international competition held in Italy last summer. Because they took first place, against seven other nations including China, they were invited to perform at another prestigious award show in Barcelona, Spain this month.

The group has 15 dancers and needs to get some donations for airfare for seven of them before they leave on the 13th of this month. Toward that end, Post 15 held (or is scheduled to hold) a benefit concert for them on the 23rd of March. Lunch (Taco bar with all the fixin’s) will be provided and donations are expected from each guest. Hopefully, we will have done some good for the group and they are all able to get to Barcelona this month. I’ll report on their successful (fingers crossed) performance in the May column.

I’ve been told that the Legion Post #15 Facebook page has been cloned and therefore taken down, (why??? I have no idea!) but a new Facebook group is in the works and will be up shortly.

Speaking of food. We have a new restaurateur (Mike Ronco) who is planning to be open seven days a week and will be providing food service for the post, the Baja Hotel, and all other events. Stop by for a bite.

We are planning an Easter Sunday brunch (with Ham and Turkey) starting around noon. The cost of the meal will be $7 USD per person if you bring a side dish, and $10 USD if you come empty handed.

Speaking of ‘reasonably priced food and drink,’ which we weren’t but are now, if you’ve been in Peñasco for any length of time, you have probably noticed the huge increase in restaurant prices, especially drink prices! I’m here to suggest that you give the American Legion Post #15 a try. The drinks are very reasonably priced, and the food costs are well below the local eateries! It’s a great place to come and hang out!

We also offer a “friends of veterans” membership for non-veterans and members (Legion or friends) who will receive a discount at the bar. So, you don’t need to be a veteran to come on by! WE ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC!!!
