Most of us come to Rocky Point for the turquoise water, the shrimp tacos, and the kind of sunsets that make you forget what day it is. But here’s something you may not know: one of the world’s most exciting wine regions is just a five-hour drive away – and you can get a little taste of it right here on Plaza Fabiola.

Valle de Guadalupe, tucked into the hills of northern Baja California just twenty minutes outside of Ensenada, has become one of the most talked-about wine destinations on the planet. What was once a rustic getaway has exploded into a world-class destination with over 150 wineries, Michelin-starred restaurants, and boutique hotels drawing visitors from Mexico City and across the United States. Wine enthusiasts who once booked flights to Napa are now pointing their GPS south of the border.

The comparison to Napa isn’t accidental. Valle de Guadalupe shares a Mediterranean climate with California’s famous wine regions, with Pacific Ocean breezes and morning fog that help grapes develop bold, fruit-forward flavors with a signature minerality – the result of the valley sitting on an ancient seabed. In 2024, Baja California took home over 70 medals at an international wine competition, the highest in Mexico for the eighth consecutive year. The rolling hills, the picturesque beauty, the cooler summer temperatures – it’s a place you could look at every single day and never get tired of it.

Rocky Point’s Own Little Slice of Wine Country

So, what if you’re not ready to make the full road trip just yet? You’re in luck, because Rocky Point now has its own wine destination. La Cava Boutique de Vinos is located in Plaza Fabiola – right down from Bandidos, before you reach the Sonoran Spa and Sonoran Sea Resorts on the right – and it brings the Valle de Guadalupe experience directly to your vacation.

I had the chance to speak with owner John Hibbert, and the story behind La Cava is a sweet one. He and his team wanted to expand what was already a beloved shop in Plaza Fabiola, and their passion for wine and the Valle de Guadalupe made the direction clear. The result is one of Rocky Point’s most unique and enjoyable experiences.

La Cava represents over 16 wineries from the Valle de Guadalupe and carries more than 100 wines. A guided tasting – typically $12 per person – walks you through three wines: usually a white, a rosé, and a red, with a knowledgeable server explaining the story, region, and flavor profile behind each pour. Add a charcuterie board for $30, and you have yourself a proper event. They also serve chocolates and light munchies to complement the experience.

When our group of ten settled in, it was relaxed, educational, and just plain fun. And if the mood strikes you – and it will – you can linger as long as you like and order another bottle or two. No rush, no pressure, just good wine and great company.

Here’s something even better: La Cava is available for private bookings after 6:00 p.m. for groups of up to 24. They can connect you with local chefs and even arrange live music, making it a perfect option for birthday celebrations, bachelorette parties, or any gathering that deserves something a little special.

And for those who aren’t wine drinkers? La Cava has you covered. They also carry fantastic chocolates, balsamic vinegars, olive oils, and naturally infused Mexican waters – making it genuinely family-friendly. Some guests bring the whole crew: adults do the wine tasting while the kids sip the infused waters and enjoy the chocolates. Everyone leaves happy.

For dinner afterward, head over to El Tapeo or Grapes and Barley to keep the wine evening going. Make a whole night of it.

Getting There: The Road Less Winding

If La Cava sparks the urge to visit the Valle itself, there are two routes from Rocky Point – and they are not created equal. The northern route takes you along La Rumorosa Highway, a winding, steep, two-lane road carved into dramatic cliffs. It’s beautiful, but “white-knuckle” is a phrase that comes to mind (at least for me).

My preferred route adds about thirty minutes but is far more enjoyable. Head south on Highway 5, past the San Felipe turnoff, and wind up through Ensenada before arriving in the Valle. There’s a pothole stretch that will test your shock absorbers for about thirty to forty-five minutes – consider it a small toll for skipping the cliffs. Coming through Ensenada is a treat in itself, and you’ll arrive relaxed and ready to explore.

Where to Stay: From Luxury to Out of This World

The accommodations alone are worth the trip. Choose from elegant vineyard villas, glamping tents with real beds and air conditioning, or transparent bubble hotels designed in France, where you fall asleep watching the stars through your ceiling. You can even sleep inside a wine barrel cabin under the open sky. And if none of that is adventurous enough, search Airbnb for “UFO Guadalupe” – a genuine flying saucer-shaped structure perched in the hills above the valley. I am completely serious. Book it before your friends do.

La Cava Boutique de Vinos is located in Plaza Fabio on Sandy Beach in Puerto Peñasco. To make a reservation, contact Yurema at 638-688-4382 or look for La Cava on Facebook.
