Hopefully this April newsletter finds you enjoying the beautiful weather. We have been blessed with beautiful weather this year. As I look at other places in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, I realize how lucky we are here in Puerto Peñasco. That lovely weather was enjoyed on the day of the Rotary Fishbowl. After all the bills were paid from this event, we netted about $3500 USD, of which $700 of that was the 50-50 drawing…like I mentioned before, this is not a huge fundraiser for the amount of work that goes into putting this event together; however, it is a great time for the community to come together for “A Taste of Peñasco” and just a very fun day. We include the money raised from this event with the 50-50 squares that we sell for the Super Bowl, which nets $6000 USD, so when we put both of our fundraising events together, we are $9500 USD richer. Once again, thank you to everyone for your support of both of these activities.
Rotary continues to assist in putting all the pieces together to open the dialysis center. We are probably a month away…finding the right staff, starting the payroll, and just opening the doors for patients is an enormous undertaking. This will be a great asset to our community and it will allow our citizens to receive treatment right here at home, making it not necessary for them to drive many hours and miles away.
This last month we continued to put some fresh paint on different locations in town. We painted a portion of Casa Hogar, and realized there’s a lot more rooms and walls that need sprucing up, so we will continue working on that project. We also continue to keep the handicap accessibility areas painted. This continues to be an ongoing project for our club.
In March, we held our semi-annual business meeting. It is at this time we share our financials and share the ideas that have been presented to our club for future projects. It seems as though there are always more projects submitted than we can adopt. We will continue to prioritize these proposals as we work to improve different aspects of our community.
We continue to enjoy our Rotary students who are with us this year, and soon they will schedule a culinary event to cook and share the cuisines from their different countries. This will be a small event with limited tickets. It will be a fundraiser for these Rotary students as they too have a project they’re working towards completion. We also have a group of Rotaract students coming from Utah in April. These students will spend a week in our community and will do all kinds of service projects from painting to construction repair, to trash pick-up. Rotaract is a high school club sponsored by Rotary. This particular club from Utah has been coming for several years and it is always a pleasure to work with them.
I guess that’s all for now. We continue to have our meetings at 9 o’clock every Wednesday morning at Puesta del Sol Restaurant at Playa Bonita. We would love to have you attend one of our meetings and see your local Rotary Club in action. I assure you, that “Service Above Self” is a great way to live. Don’t take my word for it come and experience it yourself!
