Hallelujah! We made it through the hot, humid weather in Rocky Point, and now we’re moving into the perfect time of the year. As we enjoy the next nine months of the year, it is great to watch our community come alive with lots of activities and lots of visitors. Our Rocky Point Rotary Club is gearing up for a year of activities and fundraisers that will benefit everybody in our community, and we need each and every one of you to help us make these activities and fundraisers successful!

Our first big event is our Annual Polio Plus Dinner. It will be held on October 29th at Las Palomas, and the cost is 800 pesos each. It will start at 5:00 PM. This will include dinner, a 50-50, drawing, and lots of other activities. We hope that everybody will mark this on their calendar, because, now more than ever, we need to raise money to make sure that polio stays dormant around the world. With all the discussion of diseases and vaccines, this is a very critical time for the eradication of polio. Rotary organizations around the world have made the eradication of polio a priority back in the 1950s, and we certainly do not want to take a step backward…so please, please, please support this polio plus dinner…tickets are made available by contacting me or any other Rotary member. Hope to see all of you there!!

On September 25th, we delivered cribs to the orphanage north of town. They are beginning to take infants, and the need was great for cribs, so with the assistance of a Canadian Rotary Club, we worked together, had cribs constructed locally, and through this partnership were able to equip the orphanage with several baby cribs.

I am pleased to say that our exchange students have settled in and are enjoying their experience living with their host families and attending school here in Rocky Point. As a reminder, our three exchange students this year are from Taiwan, Germany, and Belgium, and our three outgoing students are spending the year in Canada and Taiwan. Every year, it is a real treat to be involved with these young people from around the world. It is not only rewarding to share the Mexican culture with these students, but it is also very rewarding to learn from them about their home countries. If any of you would like to spend some time with these students by taking them out to dinner or teaching them pickleball, or any activity, please let me know…They are all extraordinary young people!!

On November 13th, 14th, and 15th, we will be hosting our Annual Eye Clinic through partnerships with other organizations. Through this activity, we are able to screen and provide glasses to many residents of our community. If any of you know somebody in need of glasses, now is the time to let a Rotarian know so we can be sure to put their name on a list for an appointment. Last year, we provided close to 500 pairs of glasses for all ages.

As always, we would love to share our mission with many of you and invite you to attend one of our weekly meetings to find out more about Rotary. See the information at the bottom of this article.
