With the holidays behind us, and the new year underway, the Puerto Peñasco Rotary is busy planning our annual Fishbowl Event. The event will be held at the shrimp park on February 8, the Saturday before the Super Bowl. We are busy signing up local restaurants to participate as well as artists and other craftsmen to make this a very special event. Mark your calendars and make sure you can join us. This event gives you a marvelous opportunity to sample so many different cuisines that exist in our community.

Our club will also be selling football squares for the Super Bowl. This is one of our fundraisers for the year and we will have several opportunities to buy $20 squares or even $100 squares, check with your local Rotary members to get your name in one of the pools.

Recently, our club hosted our Rotary district governor at an event at Mare Blu. This year, our district governor is Elibe Medina. Elibe is a pediatric dentist in Tijuana, Mexico and is serving the district this year in this leadership role. Our club, as well as each club member, was honored by her because of our commitment and support of Polio Plus. Our club has donated more money to this cause than any other club in the district and for that, we were recognized.

Throughout this year, we continue to work with our Rotary exchange students. We include them in as many Rotary activities as possible and they are definitely a joy to be around. It is wonderful to observe and be a part of their growth. It is amazing to me how quickly they pick up the local language and customs, and at the same time share with us special things and customs of them home countries.

Yesterday as I was on my way to play pickleball, I passed the water purification plant that was a result of a collaborative effort with the city and a district grant from Rotary. It just so happened the water truck was parked in front. This water truck was purchased by the Rotary and as a result we are able to provide clean drinking water to all the schools in Rocky Point. As I observed this accomplishment, it renewed my spirit to do more! We are in discussion with the city and the new mayor on several initiatives, which would all enhance and make this a better place to live…stay tuned!
