As the weather begins to break, it is also the time of the year to welcome back all our friends from across the border. Our Rotary is also gearing up for a very exciting year and I want to keep you abreast of some of the highlights and activities that are planned. Our annual Polio Plus dinner is scheduled for October 24th. It will be held at Coral Events in Las Conchas and the cost this year will be 800 pesos a ticket. Just a reminder this event is our effort we put forth to continue to fight the dreaded polio disease. It has been reported that the war in Gaza has caused an outbreak of polio due to poor healthcare and lack of vaccines. It is a fact that for 60 cents a child can be protected against polio. Please support this event and help us keep a handle on polio prevention around the world.
Once again, our Rotary club is hosting four Rotary exchange students. They arrived in Puerto Peñasco on August 12th and are settled in with their host families and attending school locally. The students this year are from Denmark, Belgian and two students from Germany. It is always a highlight of our year to meet these young people, and to share culture and customs. I’m sure you will have an opportunity to meet these young people at our Polio Plus dinner.
Our club has also been working to expand the number of beach wheelchairs we can infuse into the community. These wheelchairs have been a very popular item and lots of our residents, as well as visitors, have been able to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy our wonderful beach through the use of this equipment. It is our goal to increase the number of beach wheelchairs that we have available to the community.
Our Puerto Peñasco Rotary club as you know is one of many clubs around the world. But maybe you didn’t know that all the Rotary clubs are also supported by the Rotary Foundation.
The foundation can also receive charitable donations, and its mission is to support education through scholarships and service. Since it was founded more than 100 years ago, the foundation has spent more than $4 billion on life-changing sustainable projects. The Rotary Foundation helps Rotary members to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace by improving health, providing quality education, and improving the environment and alleviating poverty. The mission of our foundation is the basis for what projects we as a local Rotary take on. It is all about working to improve the quality of life in our community for all people. Like I’ve said so many times before we couldn’t do it without YOU! Please start by supporting our first event of the year, the Polio Plus Dinner.
If you want to find out more about Rotary, please join us at one of our weekly meetings. The information is at the bottom of the article.
