Puerto Peñasco continues to show strong momentum as the city advances in tourism, infrastructure, and community engagement, according to the latest update from our Tourism Office.
Semana Santa marked a successful start to our high season, with hotel occupancy reaching 95% and welcoming nearly 100,000 visitors. These figures highlight Puerto Peñasco’s growing appeal and its importance as a key tourism hub in the region.
One of the most notable developments is the construction of a new landfill, a major project led by the city administration. Currently underway, the project is expected to be completed within the next six months and represents a significant step toward improving waste management and environmental sustainability in the city.
City officials have also introduced new guidelines for events held on local beaches. Organizers planning weddings, professional photo shoots, or similar activities are now required to obtain a permit through the City Secretary’s Office or work with a professional event planner. The permit process is free of charge and aims to ensure better organization while maintaining compliance with certified beach standards.
This month will bring a variety of events for both residents and visitors. Celebrations for Cinco de Mayo will take place on May 2nd at Rodeo Drive, alongside the Cheve Fest hosted at Tapeo’s Tapas Bar. Additionally, the Office of Tourism will host “Hecho en Peñasco” (Made in Peñasco), an event designed to promote local producers and showcase regional products such as honey, salsas, and handcrafted goods. The event will be held on May 17th at Shrimp Plaza from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with support from the Business Development Office providing guidance on brand registration and access to small business loans.
From May 15th through the 17th, Puerto Peñasco will also welcome a regional congress of travel agencies from Chihuahua, Baja California, and Sinaloa. Attendees will tour local hotels, restaurants, and tourism services, further strengthening the city’s presence in key travel markets.
The month will conclude with an exciting “Border War” competition between Mexico and the United States, featuring young athletes competing in Mixed Martial Arts and Muay Thai.
As director of Tourism, I encourage the public to stay engaged and share their experiences, reinforcing the Office of Tourism’s commitment to serving as a facilitator for the continued growth and promotion of Puerto Peñasco as a premier beach destination.
