Always Remember…
Salt & Lime!!!
Feliz Octubre Rocky Point!!! Ahhh, my favorite month has made it and not just because it is my birthday month…well, maybe. No, seriously it is more that the humidity is gonzo, the ocean water is at the perfect temperature, the nights start to feel a tad of chill in the air, you get to choose whether you want to go in the sea or the pool as it is no longer too hot just to sit on the beach or by the pool, we get a holiday tossed into our month and we end it all acting crazy for Halloween…it is a COOL month 😊! Well, I finally returned from my summer trips, and it was sure good to be back in Peñasco. Cathy Pea has my main unit bombed out (under renovations) and it is looking great so far so I have been staying in our one-bedroom condo until the renovations are complete which should be…yep in OCTOBER! No matter where I am in the larger condo or the one bedroom, as long as I am chilling with mis amigos in Peñasco, TODO BUENO!!! Word to the wise, if you are traveling to and from the border on both sides watch for random objects in the road. I ran over a metal pipe on the US side of the border…it immediately blew out my tire and I was in a no cell service area near the border. Wop, wop, wop, waaahhh!!! I don’t think I’ve changed a tire in 20 years or more and I was giving it a good try and let’s just say it wasn’t going well. I am pretty sure I wasn’t meant to become a mechanic or anything resembling the profession. I was typing SOS signals on my cell phone (didn’t even know that existed but my phone was suggesting I give it a whirl so I did) to anyone I could, and one finally went through to my daughter who was on a flight coming home from London. Welp, there went that help! After an hour, along came Fernando…he was truly my angel. It actually was much more difficult than I remembered, and we managed to figure it out together. What a great Samaritan…I would have been withered away by now without him! So, please stay alert…you never know what is on the road! Speaking of roads, there is a new cantina in town right on the main road into Old Port (the Malecon). It is called Salt & Lime by Latitude 31 and recently I sat down with one of the new owners, Tony Lake.
Marco~ Hola, Tony. What’s all this about a new bar in town called Salt & Lime by Latitude 31? I hear you are a bar owner!
Tony~ Well, thank you, yes Kelly Foss and I. We purchased the iconic Latitude 31.
Marco~ Wow, I have been going to Latitude 31 for decades and it has been one of the staples of Rocky Point. First, tell me a little about your backgrounds and how you came to Rocky Point and where you are from.
Tony~ Well, Kelly and I moved from Farmington, New Mexico to Rocky Point about 4 years ago. Each of us has a 20+ year history of working in the restaurant and bar industry. Kelly worked more in the craft beer industry and in restaurants and I specialized more in sports bars and night clubs.
Marco~ Yes, I have seen you in action with your karaoke bar and trivia nights at the bars in town….that makes sense! How did you and Kelly come across the bar and purchasing Latitude 31?
Tony~ It was actually presented to Kelly and I from Mike and Cindy, the previous owners. It was a short process that took only about four meetings to iron out and the rest is history.
Marco~ If it is meant to be, then it is meant to be! Now, I see out front that it still says Latitude 31 and obviously you are still open. How did you come up with the name, Salt & Lime, and when does the new signage come up?
Tony~ Well, the new sign should be up by the beginning of October. As far as the name goes, we bounced around several ideas, but Salt & Lime seems to naturally fit both Mexico and specifically Peñasco.
Marco~ I’ll say! What are your biggest sellers as far as specialty drinks?
Tony~ Well, we have new house margaritas made from scratch that come with a salty foam on top of the margarita. It is awesome! We also have a chili infused cucumber vodka cocktail that is really amazing.
Marco~ Ok, I’ll take both! Now, what about Happy Hour? Do you have one?
Tony~ You bet! Our Happy Hour runs 7 days a week from 4-6 PM. We offer 50 pesos beers (Marco insert here……..that’s roughly $2.75😊) and 60 peso well drinks and 80 pesos wine during the 2 hours.
Marco~ Damn, I think I need to be first in line at 4 PM! Tell me about your food and your menu. I know Latitude 31 was famous for some really good dinners.
Tony~ Luckily, we inherited a great chef, so the food is REALLY good. We offer fresh ceviche and many different Mexican dishes with our own flair. We have burgers of the week along with seafood consisting of several fish and shrimp dishes. Due to its popularity at Latitude 31, we are keeping the meatloaf special Wednesday nights. It is all homemade and comes with mashed potatoes. We have several unique appetizers and bar snacks so there is a little bit for everyone whether you are coming for dinner, some appetizers to share or just a snack….we have you covered!
Marco~ That all sounds amazing. Now I am more of a music guy, tell me about your music plans….any plans for live music?
Tony~ Yes, we plan to have live music nights and bigger plans to build an outdoor stage and have live music where people can sit outside 9 months of the year and listen to live music.
Marco~ Now that sounds like a winner! Since I am not the best driver known to man nor drive often, why don’t you tell our Rocky Point Times readers how to find Salt & Lime by Latitude 31?
Tony~ Ok, so that is an easy one. We are located right on the main drag coming into town, Benito Juarez. We are located right across the street from the Anchor Monument on Benito Juarez as you are about to enter into the Malecon.
Marco~ Ok, way better than I could have put it! Anything else you would like to add about you or Kelly to the Rocky Point Times readers?
Tony~ We first moved to be closer to Kelly’s mom who has run a rental business in town for 40 years. We are very excited with our new venture and love the city. We are very grateful for how fast everyone embraced us and the modernization that has taken place and what is yet to come.
- Well thank you Tony for sharing all of your exciting new life in Rocky Point. We all wish you both much success in the years ahead and I look forward to seeing your stage go up and Salt & Lime by Latitude 31 become a part of the bands that come to town for the music festivals throughout the year! As Drake sings in Slime You Out, “October is all about me ’cause your turn should’ve been over”. Peace out and salud to a great fall season.
ADIOS AMIGOS
GOD BLESS
Marco
