Sometimes we forget how good we have it, weather-wise, in Peñasco. Yes, the daytime high can drop below 70-degrees, and we will experience the occasional cloudy day (we get less rain than Phoenix) that breaks up a string of sunny days. Originally from the Midwest, I had to deal with real winters. Living here long enough to reprogram and block out harsh winter thoughts. I prefer 80-degree days, but if it gets down to 60-degrees, I am the first one to complain about the cold. You’ll see me at the Pit Bar in my ski jacket, gloves, Stormy Kromer North Woods Trapper Hat (yes, I still have one) with the ear flaps pulled down.
Reality check, I received a text from a husband and wife fly fishing guide couple from Minneapolis, desperate to escape a real winter. The text inquired about winters in Puerto Peñasco and the possibilities of fly fishing. They were planning on staying a month at an Airbnb. I immediately returned their text with a call and talked their ears off about the fishing. That led to other questions and phone calls. I am really looking forward to their Puerto Peñasco visit.
These folks are kind, thoughtful, and have invited a guide buddy of theirs to join them here in Peñasco for a week. It’s my understanding that the buddy has more bad luck lately than a sad Country Western Ballad. Sand, sun, and saltwater have healing therapeutic qualities. Those of us who listen to Jimmy Buffett songs will swear that it’s true. I hope they get healed up and ready for the rest of the winter back home. It’s amazing what a warm sunny afternoon, catching a few fish, and finishing the day with some oysters can do to lift one’s spirit.
The winter fishing is a bit slow, but it will start to improve as soon as the water starts to warm up in March, and you start seeing bait fish.
