I can’t get that Zac Brown song out of my head, “I got my toes in the water, ass in the sand, not a worry in the world…” Yes, it’s time to plan your Puerto Peñasco Spring Break! The weather is warming up, and the fly fishing gets good, and then gets better as the water warms up. March, April, May, June, and even into July are incredible months to visit Rocky Point. Fly fishing for Orange Mouth Corvina, Trigger, Grouper, Bone Fish, Red Snapper, Flounder, and Cabrilla could be your catch of the day.

I would suggest your dates for fishing are on neap tide dates, less tide makes it easier to control your kayak, or pontoon boat. Fly fishing gear: 8 weight fly rod with sinking fly lines, most fish are caught in deeper water. Size 6 Clousers and Gotcha’s for early spring then some lager size 4 later in the spring, and size 2 during the summer.

Some favorite places to fish are right off Mirador Beach and toward the Malecon, The First and Second Estuaries are also good places to fish. Having a pontoon boat, or a kayak gives you more fishing area, but you still can fish from the shore. Having access to a bigger boat opens more opportunities.

The Chartreuse Clouser Minnow pictured is usually one of the first flies that I tie on for a fly-fishing day. Other good colors are red, white, black, and pink. Hope to see you on the water soon.
