Normally, October and November are great times to visit and fly fish Puerto Peñasco. This last October was unseasonably hot, and I hope November returns to normal temperatures. Generally speaking, I seem to have better fish catching results during the warm and hot months than I do during the coldest days of winter. So, the Desert Fly Casters a fly-fishing club in Chandler, Arizona schedules a spring and a fall fly fishing outing. The fall outing is scheduled for November 20-26, 2024.

The outing is a member’s only event, but there is one more club meeting Wednesday, November 13th at 7:00PM at the Chandler Elks Club. Meetings are open to the public, stop in and check us out.

Saltwater fly fishing is different from freshwater Trout and Bass fishing, and the more experienced saltwater fly fishers make an effort to coach up the new saltwater fishers. Generally, the gear is more heavy duty, and fast sinking fly lines are used to sink the baitfish, shrimp, and crab pattern flies. Casting greater distances is helpful, and we work on that during this outing. Fly tying demos, and knot tying are part of this outing.

Why would anyone want to fish saltwater you ask? Even the small fish are stronger and fight harder. Larger fish are caught and generally the different kinds of fish caught is spectacular. It’s not uncommon for a new fly fisher to catch 4-6 different new species of fish on this outing. It’s not uncommon for a good fly fisher to have a plus 20 fish landed day.

Most of the club fishing occurs off of Mirador Beach and La Pinta the Second Estuary. You can fish from shore, but having a pontoon boat or kayak will improve your productive time on the water. Many of our members camp at Playa de Oro RV Park or stay at the Mirador Hotel. Make reservations for your next fly-fishing outing. Desert Fly Caster web contact information: desertflycasters@gmail.com
