Puerto Peñasco is heading into summer with great momentum after hotels across the city reached nearly 100% occupancy during Memorial Day weekend, reaffirming Rocky Point’s position as one of the region’s favorite beach destinations.
At the tourism office we see the successful holiday weekend as a positive indicator of what is expected to be another strong tourism season. Local businesses, restaurants, hotels, and service providers benefited from the large number of visitors who traveled to enjoy the beaches, nightlife, and hospitality that continue to make Puerto Peñasco a top destination for travelers from Arizona and beyond.
At City Hall, municipal administration also announced an important leadership update. Longtime local accountant Héctor Bernal has officially been named the city’s new Treasurer. Hector Bernal, recognized in the community for his professional experience and commitment, now assumes responsibility for overseeing the city’s financial operations.
Environmental efforts continue to stand out as one of Puerto Peñasco’s strongest achievements. According to Marcia Ortega, Operating Manager for the Clean Beaches Committee, Playa Hermosa, Sandy Beach, and Islas del Mar successfully completed their annual clean beach certification audits. The accomplishment reflects the continuous collaboration between local authorities, environmental organizations, tourism representatives, and community members working to preserve the city’s coastal areas.
Sandy Beach also celebrates an important milestone by maintaining its Clean Beach Certification for ten consecutive years, while Esmeralda Beach continues holding the internationally recognized Blue Flag Certification, one of the world’s highest environmental distinctions for beaches and marinas.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway for this year’s Peñasco Pride Festival under the theme “Pride and Freedom”. The celebration will feature a parade and community festival scheduled for Saturday, June 13, at the City Auditorium, bringing together residents and visitors in a celebration of diversity and inclusion.
Another important collaboration currently developing involves the Nogales U.S. Consulate and Puerto Peñasco’s Office of Tourism. Representatives from the Consulate recently visited the city to discuss organizing a future “Town Hall Meeting” aimed at informing local residents and visitors about the services available through the U.S. Consulate and how those services may be facilitated through City Hall. Dates and additional details are expected to be announced soon.
As Puerto Peñasco enters the busy summer months, city officials continue encouraging visitors and residents alike to enjoy the beaches responsibly while supporting the local community that helps make Rocky Point a welcoming destination year-round.
