People sometimes ask me why I chose animal welfare. My answer usually surprises them. Of course I love animals. I always will. But the reason I do this work is because I love people. That may sound like an odd answer until you spend a little time in animal welfare.
Every rescue begins with a person. Every adoption begins with a family. Every dog that is sterilized, every cat that receives medical care, every frightened puppy that finds safety happens because someone decided to care.
Animals have an incredible way of bringing people together.
I’ve watched children learn that kindness is a choice. I’ve seen families beam with pride after adopting a pet. I’ve watched volunteers discover they can make a real difference. I’ve seen clients leave our clinic not only with a healthier animal, but with more confidence and knowledge than when they arrived.
Those moments stay with me.
People often ask what happens at Compassion Without Borders. They imagine surgeries, rescues, and adoptions. Those things are certainly part of our work, but what I see every day is something even bigger.
I see Liz, our lead Animal Care Technician, encouraging a teammate who’s learning something new. I see Karina, our rescue coordinator, refusing to give up on an animal that everyone else overlooked. I see Dr. Edith and Dr. Marisela, our doctors, performing sterilization, caring for families with the same compassion they show every patient. Again and again, I watch ordinary people choose kindness.
That’s what gives me hope.
Compassion has a way of spreading. One act of kindness toward an animal often leads to another. A child grows into an adult who teaches their own children. A family shares what they’ve learned with a neighbor. Someone volunteers for the first time. Someone chooses to adopt instead of buy. Small moments become lasting change.
The animals may be the reason we meet, but compassion is what grows.
For me, that has always been the heart of this work. Helping animals has become one of my favorite ways to connect with people, and every day I’m reminded that when we care for the most vulnerable among us, we become a kinder community together.
