There Is So Much Joy Here. Sometimes it is loud and ridiculous. A dog discovering a toy for the first time. Someone getting absolutely flattened by an overenthusiastic greeting. A cat asleep in a place where no cat was ever meant to fit. Dogs with very specific opinions about bath time, treats, blankets, people, and pretty much everything else.

There is the joy of watching an animal begin to trust. Seeing their body soften. Watching them realize that food is going to come every day, that nobody is going to hurt them, that they can sleep deeply, play, be silly, and simply be a dog.

Gamora is one of those dogs for me. She came to us from a hoarding case and lived with us for about a year. A year is a long time to know a dog. You learn their personality, their habits, their funny little ways. They become part of the everyday life of the shelter, and all the while you are hoping the right family is going to come along and see exactly what you see in them.

Gamora’s family finally did. Now she goes to the beach. She sleeps in a bed with her family. She gets to have the kind of completely ordinary dog life that somehow feels extraordinary when you know where she started.

I love seeing those photos more than I can explain. A dog we knew in one chapter of her life is now off living an entirely different one. She is not waiting anymore. She is not one of the dogs at the shelter anymore. She belongs to somebody. She has her people, her bed, her beach days, her routine, and a life that is hers.

There are so many moments like this in rescue. Animals getting healthy. Frightened dogs becoming goofy. Former street dogs stretched across couches as though they have been there forever. Dogs learning that car rides can end somewhere wonderful and that hands can be gentle. Those are the things I wish people could see more often. Because there really is so much joy here.  And sometimes it looks exactly like Gamora and a day at the beach.
