Puerto Peñasco, Mexico
“The Legion by the Sea”
Hola! It’s July but we aren’t letting the heat and humidity slow us down here at the post. After a patriotic, but somber, Memorial Day at the grave sites of seven fallen U.S. veterans buried in Peñasco, the post kept up the pace, making donations to our “Empty Bowls” charity and adopting Casa Hogar (old folks’ home) here in town as another worthy charity. The post donated $100 toward their grocery needs. We will continue to do so moving forward, but this donation is nowhere near enough. Please stop by the post to make a donation to help out the seniors at Casa Hogar. It’s a worthy charity. You can put your donation in an envelope marked “Casa Hogar” and take it to the post. Ask for Robin Wallace or simply give it to the bartender and he/she will make sure it gets to the right place. In fact, if you want to make any type of donation for the Legion charities, just come on by! We are always looking for a few more charitable people to help us help our community.
At the American Legion here in Peñasco, we don’t just ‘throw money’ at charities. We also get our hands dirty (well, at least some of us do) Robert Hayes along with Chris Ortega and Laura Neal (from Zays Western Bar and Grill) jumped in to replace the kitchen sink and did some needed plumbing repairs at Casa Hogar and Marsha Nofzinger, Riley and Thatcher dropped off huge bags of bedding and clothing there as well.
If you’ve wanted to make such donations but didn’t know where or how, bring your donations to the post, and we’ll be sure to get your donations to the needy here in town. After all is said and done, we at American Legion Post 15 are members of the community and we have the ability to help the less fortunate members of that community, so if you are visiting, a part time or permanent resident, please consider donating your unwanted or gently used items to help your neighbors.
Speaking of (we weren’t but are now) Memorial Day and the deceased veterans, two of the graves have no headstones and two next to them have new headstones. During our ceremony, the idea was floated, by the Post 15 Legion Riders and other post members, to possibly purchase headstones for the two graves that lacked them. I’ll keep you informed if that idea bears fruit.
