Often associated with Halloween – Dia de Los Muertos has its own unique story, celebrating life after death. “Intertwined” is the story of how the Marigold became the flower symbolic of this day: Aztec lovers Xochiti and Huitzilin were in love from childhood. They promised never to be apart and that their love would last until the end of time, both in life and death.
But war erupted and Huitzilin had to join the fight.
News came to Xochitl that Huizilin had died in battle. Xochitl’s heart was broken as she could not bear the thought of being without her love. She ran to the top of the mountain and cried to Tonatiuh the God of the sun, to join her to Huitzilin for eternal life. Tonatiuh beamed a ray of sunlight upon her head and turned her into a marigold as bright as the sun and Huitzilin, her love, was turned into a hummingbird. The hummingbird came and kissed the beautiful golden flower, and the marigold opened her multiple petals and released a mysterious and wonderful fragrance. Thus, the Marigold, or Cempasuchi flower, became the symbol of Dia de Los Muertos!
Visiting Rodeo Drive is always a wonderful experience. Best prices, friendliest vendors and great selection of Mexican artifacts in Puerto Peñasco.
