In case you haven’t heard of Barb’s Dog Rescue, we’d like to tell you a little about this very special place that exists here in our city.
Barb’s Dog Rescue started very humbly by an angel on earth, who saw the suffering of the street dogs in Puerto Peñasco. She bought a tiny home on the outskirts of town that had a large yard, and one by one, she began saving dogs. That was back in 2001.
In the decades since, Barb’s Dog Rescue has grown into an amazing organization that saves hundreds of dogs each year, complete with an intake facility, and several acres of property that serve as home to approximately 400 dogs. When dogs are saved from the streets, most require medical care for their injuries. Some have been mistreated and abused; it is not uncommon for us to see dogs who have been maimed (knife injuries, ears chopped off, doused with hot oil, even paws, and legs cut off). Many times, dogs have been hit by cars and need orthopedic surgery to repair their limbs. Other dogs need treatment for various illnesses common to the streets. Tick Fever, parasites, TVT, distemper, and Parvo are rampant here, and we do everything we can to treat and heal each dog that we receive. While we work to heal their broken bodies, we also take great care to show them what love feels like. What a beautiful thing it is to see their transformation as they settle into their cozy dog beds, sleep soundly, enjoy their nutritious meals, and learn to accept pets from patient human hands!
Once our dogs are healthy, vaccinated, and spayed/neutered, they are made available for adoption here in Mexico and also in Arizona. Visitors are always welcome to stop by the rescue—we are open seven days a week, from 10am-4pm. We would love to take you on a tour and introduce you to some of the sweetest faces you’ll ever meet! Big, small, puppy to senior citizen, we’re sure we have a dog that will pull at your heart strings! If you can’t make it to Rocky Point, watch for adoption events in AZ—our event calendar can be found on our website (www.barbsdogrescue.org). Click on our “adopt” link to see our dogs.
There are some dogs who come to us who have such deep-seated issues, won’t ever be able to acclimate into life in a home. For those dogs, Barb’s Dog Rescue will be their home for life, where they will live out their years without having the stresses that street life brings.
We know that visiting a shelter can be hard on the heart. Our rescue is different—our dogs live as a community, in group settings, where they have plenty of room to interact, run, and play. We even have a dog park! We’ve just finished our Barb’s Dog Rescue calendar for 2025! Each month tells a beautiful story, complete with photos of our miracle dogs. Our calendars are 25$ each, shipped right to your door, and if you’re a dog person, you gotta have one! Purchase your calendar using this link: https://www.createphotocalendars.com/Store/Barb+s+Dog+Rescue+2025+Calendar-4967169986 Calendars can also be purchased on our website.
If you’re here in RP, we encourage you to pay a visit to BDR and spend a little time simply loving on our dogs…they get so excited to greet visitors! We accept donations of all kinds…food, supplies, toys, beds, leashes, collars, blankets, towels, sheets, etc. If you have anything “dog” that you’d like to donate, bring it on over! We’re located just off the main highway, about 7 miles outside of the city—watch for the bright yellow Barb’s Dog Rescue billboard!
