As summer approaches and the school year is coming to an end, it is the time of the year when we say goodbye to our Rotary exchange students. Our club wanted to send them off in style, so we had a big picnic at the Estuary with lots of food and lots of games, and lots of camaraderie when our students return to their respective countries, which this year were Germany, Denmark, and Belgium I know they will take wonderful memories of their time spent in Puerto Peñasco.
I was in hopes that the dialysis center in Rocky Point would be open by now. This has been a very difficult undertaking with many moving parts that need to be addressed. We are getting much closer to the opening; however, we still have a few needs. one of our biggest needs is a generator. This is the size we are looking for, and it can be new or used: minimum 20KW with voltage 120V or 240V. It needs to be two or three-phase gasoline or diesel. Also, it needs to be auto-transfer equipped and have a noise-eliminating enclosure. If any of YOU readers have some ideas on how we can purchase this or get it donated, please let me know just give me a call. This is holding up our opening right now, and we really need to acquire this generator ASAP.
July is the month that we have our annual changing of the Guard. Our new president for 2025-26 is Luis Alberto Altamirano. Luis is a coffee roaster and owns Cafe Puerto Viejo. If you have not tried one of his famous blends of coffee, you are really missing out. He is located right off the Malecon and has the best coffee in town. Stop by his place and have a cup of coffee and ask him about Rotary and what it’s like being president of the Puerto Peñasco Rotary Club.
As we begin our plans for next year, we remember the Rotary vision statement that goes like this: together we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change across the globe in our communities and in ourselves. Keeping that in mind, we are pursuing a global grant, the purpose of this grant will be to establish a facility and medical expertise to provide a much-needed prosthesis. There are so many amputees in our community that we would like to be able to provide them with mobility and a better quality of life. We have just started working on this grant and have a long way to go. We will be establishing a global partner in another much-needed country to partner with us. This is in its infancy, but it’s the same way we started with the water purification plant that now provides and delivers drinking water to all the elementary schools in town. As always, I will keep you posted on our progress.
To all of you…have a wonderful summer, and again, thank you for how you have supported Rotary this past year. I know we will be asking for your support again next year because we couldn’t do it without you!
