February is a very busy month for the Puerto Peñasco Rotary Club. It has become a tradition with our club that we host the annual “Shrimp Bowl” event. This event will take place on February 7th, the day before the Super Bowl. We nicknamed this event the “Taste of Peñasco” because it features so many of our local restaurants. It is our annual Rotary fundraiser, and as always, we depend on all of you to attend this event so we can reach our fundraising goal. We are in the process right now of contacting the restaurants as well as local artists in the community and asking them to be a part of this day. This fun day is a great way to sample so many different local cuisines, and everyone will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite chef/restaurant.
Continuing with the Shrimp Bowl/Super Bowl theme, our club will also be selling football squares. We will sell $20 squares…giving back $1,000 USD to the winners of the $20 board. We will also be selling $100 squares and giving back $ 5,000 USD to one lucky winner from that board. If you know a local Rotarian, ask them about the football squares. It’s always a fun activity and makes some great money for the club.
Our club will also be distributing eyeglasses to the hundreds of people who were tested and/or prescribed corrective lenses. It has been a little tricky this year to get the glasses across the border. We hope to accomplish this activity during this month.
I know you’ve heard me talk about this many times, as we have dedicated so much time and effort to opening the dialysis center, and we are almost there! This has been a daunting task, but nothing worthwhile is easy, and being able to offer this service to the people of our community will be a great benefit to so many. Being able to receive a much-needed treatment in a local dialysis center and not having to drive 100+ miles will serve our community well. A big thank you to all of you who have helped make this possible…Hopefully, none of us will ever need to use the services that this facility will render, but it sure will be nice to have it locally… just in case.
I guess that’s all for right now, as I am writing this from Belize and hoping it will transmit…starting the new year on a lovely cruise. As always, if any of you would like to join us for a weekly Rotary meeting, we would love to have you. The information on where we meet will be at the bottom of this article. Service above self is the Rotary motto, and it is a wonderful way to live.
