Summer has definitely arrived. I hope all of you had a great Memorial Day Holiday Weekend and came down for Circus Mexicus. If you came down for the Memorial Day Weekend, you may’ve noticed that Hwy. 8 was in a little better condition than it’s been. That was thanks to Encantame Resorts filling the potholes making the road a little safer for everyone. Yes, it was a temporary fix and hopefully a permanent solution is in the works. Drive safely, try not to bunch up with other vehicles and take your time.

I don’t know if this was a “thing” or not, but there was a post circulating on Facebook that the border hours, on Friday nights, were extended beyond the last official stated date of October 10th. We’ve had no official word or anything in writing so, until we do, all we know is that the border is open every Friday night until 10PM until October 10th. Once we get confirmation, we’ll be sure to let you know.

A big apology to Melody Scott who was mentioned as a participant in the Empty Bowls 1st Annual Amateur Soup Cook-off article last month. Unfortunately, her last name spelling took a turn for the dumpster, and I missed it (some Editor, eh?). She took it very well, so thanks Melody.

This month we have Circus Mexicus to look forward to as well as the 10th Annual El Chevefest at El Tapeo. Circus Mexicus brings a ton of musical talent to Puerto Peñasco who perform live all over town. RCPM has certainly turned a lot of people onto Peñasco and a lot of people onto new musicians and done heaps for the locals here, so we hope you support them as well and come out and enjoy some live music. If you’re reading this before Circus Mexicus be sure to stop by KM13 on Hwy. 8 and leave some swag, grab some swag, take a photo, post and tag everyone. Feel free to send us any and all photos Rocky Point related and maybe you and/or your photo will end up on the cover! If you’ve never stopped by KM13 – do so this trip down – you’re sure to meet some other concert goers and some super fun people. El Tapeo’s Chevefest is toward the end of the month and is a craft beer festival. It is always well attended and lots of fun and they also have great wine and food! Infusion del Golfo Restaurant at Laguna Shores Resort is holding Mixology Classes and there is lots of other stuff going on this month so be sure to check out the Events Page and our Facebook Page for last-minute events that missed print.

During this time of the year, one of the best things to do in Puerto Peñasco is hop on a sunset cruise – or sometimes referred to as a “booze cruise” for those old enough to drink. For as little as $25pp you can be out on the water for a few hours. The weather is perfect right now and if there is some cloud coverage, you’re guaranteed a beautiful sunset. You’re guaranteed a beautiful sunset and experience anyway, but clouds usually add a little something special as do the dolphins and sea lions you may see. An inexpensive activity and excellent value for your hard-earned money.

Ah, speaking of hard-earned money…the peso vs. USD debate. I know we’ve had this convo many times before, but it’s an important one to keep having since we have so many new people. If you don’t carry both monetary denominations on you, it is VERY important that you ask what the “tipo de cambio” (exchange rate) is before you place an order or make a purchase – anywhere! Every single business, from bars to restaurants, grocery stores, street stands, gas stations, furniture stores, etc. all have their own exchange rate which may or may NOT be what you think it should be. We don’t usually have this issue when the peso stays steady, but when it fluctuates as it has done for the past few years, businesses tend to set their own rate of exchange. Probably 99% of them are what you’d expect, but there’s always that zinger somewhere. Please do yourself a favor and ask what the businesses exchange rate is before you make ANY transaction and, like I said – this goes for every business. Captain Obvious, but in some cases, it pays to do the math – you may be saving money paying in one denomination or the other depending on what rate of exchange you got. Hope that makes sense. Don’t assume – just ask. And same goes with credit cards – do they charge a fee? Does your credit card charge a fee? And the first questions you ask, “Do you accept credit cards AND is your machine working”. People are amazed that businesses in Mexico don’t accept credit cards and I’m just as amazed that businesses in the U.S. won’t accept cash. Really? I just ran into another the other day. And now my U.S. bank charges for depositing cash. Wow! Viva Mexico – where you can still pay for your tacos and beer in cash…pesos or dollars!

As always, have a super June and see you at the beach!
