July – it’s a scorcher. The blazing heat and humidity that we endure during these summer months has many of us choosing to seek out cool, indoor spaces with plenty of air conditioning, but the dogs don’t have that luxury.
We’re sure you’ve seen it with your own eyes…street dogs that are injured, malnourished, pregnant, and suffering from extreme heat exhaustion. During the daytime hours, you’ll see them hiding under cars and bushes, seeking any kind of escape from the brutal, deadly temperatures. As the sun sets, these poor, innocent souls come out of their hiding places to look for food and water. Survival is not easy…many of these dogs succumb to the extreme conditions and do not survive.
Barb’s Dog Rescue saves as many dogs as we possibly can – at any given time, our shelter is home to somewhere around 350 dogs. We can keep saving them, but we must, must find them homes. We need good people like you to come to the rescue and fall in love! If you aren’t ready to add a dog to your family, you can help by spreading the word about Barb’s Dog Rescue. There are thousands of people who know of us, visit us, and support us, but what if we had hundreds of thousands of fans? We dream about all of the amazing things we could do if we only had the resources, and the key to making it happen is to spread awareness about our work.
When you’re here and you see a suffering street dog, leave them some food and water. Many of us who live here in Puerto Peñasco make it standard procedure to have a large supply of food and water that we keep in our vehicles. Have conversations with locals about the dogs you see and encourage them to reach out for help through Rocky Point’s free spay neuter/vaccine service, available through our friends and partners at the Home For Hope/Esperanza Clinic. The street dog epidemic ends when spay/neuter becomes the norm, and we’re fortunate to live in a community where these services are available to locals, free of charge.
On a happier note, we hope you enjoy every moment of your time in our seaside paradise. Eat the food! Drink the drinks! Swim in the Sea! Dance to the music! And come to Barb’s Dog Rescue to pet the dogs! We are open seven days/week from 10am-4pm, and the dogs get so excited for visitors. We will fill your pockets with treats and take you on a walk through our very own Dog Disneyland!
If you’d like to make a donation, that can be done on our website (www.barbsdogrescue.org), or you can drop off donations of food, toys, beds leashes and all things “dog” at our front gate when you visit. Thank you for the love and support over the last almost 25 years, and remember, Rescue Never Stops.
