In October, Rotary provided vision screening and eyeglasses to 339 residents of Rocky Point. Our Rotary Club held a very beneficial clinic with our “Hope Alliance” partners from Utah, and as a result 264 children and 75 adults will pick up much-needed glasses on December 6th. The Puerto Peñasco Rotary coordinated this effort and dedicated it to our recently deceased president, Chuy. This was one of the initiatives he felt so strongly about and wanted to pursue this during his term of office…, so we couldn’t let him down. With the help of our friends from Utah along with the usage donation of the LDS church and all the local ophthalmologists as well as Doctors from Phoenix we were able to provide a valuable service to the community.
In October, we also hosted the polio plus dinner. We will continue to do this annually to make sure that polio never becomes the much-dreaded disease that it was during the 1950’s. As a child I still remember getting my first polio shot in the first grade. We lined up in the hall and took our turn and at that time, no one was sure there wouldn’t be negative effects from the vaccine. However, the disease was so feared It was worth taking the chance… Thank goodness it was a cure! Rotary has been involved with the eradication of polio since that time and made it a Rotary Mission to do this worldwide. Next month, I’ll have some reports of how much money we raised from our dinner along with a big thank you to those who bought tickets for this worthy cause.
Our club is talking about several different issues that we would like to focus on this year. They range from trying to get the dialysis center open, providing education to adults that would like to learn to read, cleaning up the city of litter, and continuing our efforts to combat Rickettsia/Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. As you can see, there’s lots of work that needs to be done. If you’re interested in joining us, please come to one of our weekly meetings the information of how to contact me and how to attend a meeting is at the bottom of this article. Like I have said so many times before…” service above self” what a wonderful way to live!
