Spring, Summer, and Fall Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point) is a consistently good place to fish. The numbers of different fish, the fight in the fish, and sometimes the size of the fish can be a grand opportunity for a fly fisher. Winter fishing is the worst time to fish but recently, in February I managed to have a few good days of fishing.

If you have not visited Rocky Point lately, within the last year, you will find new restaurants, bars, buildings, and hotels that you will want to try. It’s been available for quite some time, but I have just started launching my kayak from the marina. It’s an easy launch if you have a kayak, or pontoon boat. Just drive to the water’s edge unload/load and not get knocked down by waves on a windy day. Another landmark place you may have not tried before would be the Oyster Bars at the First Estuary. This is another way to expand your culinary palate and enjoy a real treat.

You can fish from shore, but you will be able to catch more fish if you fish from a pontoon boat or kayak. Remember your PDF. This is a fun trip with fish catching, good food, joke telling, and a raffle one night at a cantina. If you have something to put in the raffle, bring it along.

Some travel tips…Allow more time for crossing the border both going into and leaving Mexico. Everyone gets stopped and inspected for now. I arrived at the border around 9:30 AM mid-week and it took about 10 minutes. On the way out I hit the border around 9:00 AM and again it took about 10 minutes. There were 8 teams of two officers inspecting the outgoing vehicles. I would expect a long wait if you hit the border at Noon on Sunday or Monday. Another word of caution slows down going through Ajo, AZ and Sonoyta, Mexico and Highway 85 from Gila Bend to Ajo. This section of the Highway is getting more attention from the State Police.
