Shopping at its finest is right here in Puerto Peñasco on RODEO DRIVE. The street has a wide variety of “Made in Mexico” treats that are a delight to the eye and easy on the wallet. Many times, the item you are looking at was made right there on the Drive and the person you buy it from is the daughter, mother, son, father or even the grandparent of the creator.
There are metal flowers and cactus and, if you are so inclined, a 10-foot metal dinosaur awaiting you. There are women’s dress shops featuring cotton resort clothing perfect for our warm climate and shops selling shell art. Rico features leather work, everything from a change purse to a custom seat for your Harley Davidson Motorcycle. Then there’s Suzanne making delightful bracelets right before your eyes while her mother weaves baskets. Did you know that basket weaving is seasonal? The reeds must be fresh, or they become sharp and cut your hands.
You will also enjoy the wonderful selection of original art up and down the drive. All from Mexico and most from local incredibly talented artists. There are also historic framed photos from the 1960’s that are something to see. They were taken from old slides and reproduced. Many of the artists will do custom work, so if you want a picture of your portrait or your pet’s portrait it can be done, or maybe a favorite photo or mural done just you.
The hand painted pottery you see on Rodeo Drive is imported from Southern Mexico. The variety is endless. Everything from vases and flowerpots in all imaginable sizes and colors to sinks and even napkin holders. What a great accessory item for any decor and a conversation piece as well. The good news is the prices are right on target.
You will find so many things I could go on and on. There are napkins and lighting fixtures, sunglasses and bathing suits. Quite a variety, something for everyone, that is for sure.
When you shop locally you are making such a significant impact on our community. When shopping on Rodeo Drive you will notice that many of the vendors live behind their store or just above it. Hit first by the pandemic and then the border closing, it has been a real struggle for these people but they carry-on with a smile.
Once you have shopped “’til you’ve almost dropped, there is a great Mexican Restaurant for a delicious lunch or dinner or just a cold drink. Authentic Mexican Food and margaritas made right there just for you.
See you on the Drive!
