As we’re winding down summer, Rodeo Drive is gearing up for its celebration of Dia de Los Muertos – our beachside shopping strip is busy preparing for this two-day festival held on October 31st and November 1st. Far from morbid, it’s a joyful tradition blending indigenous Mexican beliefs with Roman Catholic influences, creating a welcoming space for the spirits of deceased loved ones believed to visit during this holiday.
One of the main elements is the ofrenda (a home altar traditionally built) that serves as a spiritual bridge, inviting their ancestors’ spirits to join the living for a brief festive reunion during the holiday.
Each item on the altar has a symbolic weight, connecting the physical and spiritual worlds. You will see photographs, candles to light the way, Marigolds, whose strong scent is thought to attract the spirit, the favorite food and drink of the deceased, and sugar skulls representing the sweetness of life and the cyclical nature of death. Rodeo Drive, as a tourist hub, showcases ofrendas that blend all the traditional elements with a unique view of death-not an end but a continuation of love and memory.
The street will be closed off to traffic, as in addition to altars, you’ll see Catrinas, food, music, entertainment, and a parade on Saturday night.
Rodeo Drive is Puerto Peñasco’s premier shopping area. Always a great selection of beautifully made in Mexico crafts and art. Friendly vendors, great prices, and a unique selection. SEE YOU ON THE DRIVE.
