Ending polio is a hallmark of Rotary’s commitment to global health, unbiased by borders or wealth. What began as a Rotarian dream became the global polio eradication initiative, a historic partnership that since 1988 has cut down cases of polio by 99.9% and protected billions of children.
On the way to a polio-free world, a unique partnership exists between national governments and six core partners. These partners include Rotary, UNICEF, and the Gates Foundation…united behind the vision that every child lives free of Pollo.
Recently, many of you attended our Annual Rotary Polio Plus Dinner on October 29th. Through your generous support of our club, we were able to do our part to assist in the accomplishment of this worldwide initiative. On a sidenote, of all the Rotary clubs in our district, our club leads the charge for raising the most money for the support of this worldwide initiative…A recognition we are very proud of receiving…Thanks to all of you for making this happen!
There are always many opportunities for our Rotary Club to partner with other Rotary Clubs around the world. Recently, we joined forces with the Calgary Stampede Club 05360 and the Scottsdale Sunrise Club 05495. By pooling resources, we were able to construct 15 new baby cribs and deliver them to a newly established wing of Casa Hogar Esperanza Para Los Niños Orphanage in Rocky Point. Rotarians from the Scottsdale Club were able to join us when we delivered the beds. It is always wonderful to meet with fellow Rotarians from clubs around the world. The discussions are great as we share how we demonstrate “service above self” in our respective communities.
We are presently gearing up for our annual eye clinic to be held on November 12th through the 14th. Many volunteers come together each year to make this annual event a reality. We have optometrists, ophthalmologists, and other vision experts as well as lots of individuals who give their time to make sure that the children, as well as the adults in our community, can see! If you know of anybody who needs glasses and needs their eyes checked, please let me know. You can contact me by phone or email at the end of this article. You can also let any Rotarian know of someone who needs help.
As always, we are constantly looking for volunteers and people who might want to get involved or maybe even become a Rotarian. We meet every Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock. Check out the information at the bottom of this article. There is always a lot of work to be done in our community, and we welcome any help you are willing to give. Join us and see what a good feeling it is to live by the Rotary motto of: Service Above Self. As always.
