Ahhhh, get ready for Rocky Point’s best months. The weather has turned gorgeous and should be for months to come. The whacky weather should be behind us and hopefully our days will be filled with sunshine and just a slight breeze. If I’m not mistaken this was only the 2nd time in my (almost) 30 years living in Rocky Point full-time that there has been noticeable snow on the Pinacate’s…nice to see…glad it’s over! I’m looking forward to spending some days out on the water paddleboarding, taking trips to Bird Island to snorkel with the sea lions, catching some sunset cruises and just hanging out on the Sea of Cortez in general and soaking up the sun. I haven’t been home much in the past couple of months so it will be nice to get back home. I have a lot of work to catch up on! So many new restaurants and bars that I have to hit as well as do a little gambling at the casino.
Many of you may not be aware that Peñasco lost one of its favorites last month when Russ Black passed away unexpectedly. You may know him and his wife, Naomi Black from the Mermaid’s Market or perhaps you have been on a tour or trip with Russ over the years or just know him from being around town. Russ and Naomi are Rocky Point fixtures and Russ’s positive attitude, and smiles will definitely be missed. Our hearts go out to Naomi and the family. Their daughter, Bethany has set up a GoFundMe Page to help her Mom with the medical expenses that were incurred in both Mexico and the U.S. The page is “In memory of Russ Black” and all donations will go directly to Naomi to help her pay the medical bills and final expenses.
The Mermaid’s Market takes a break every April to make way for the Muestra Artesanal Oaxaqueña – or Oaxaca Market as us Gringo’s like to say. It runs from March 23rd to April 17th from 10AM to 10PM and features handmade Mexican crafts, food and live music. Comedian Tony Mendoza will perform April 8th and 9th at 7PM and on April 15th and 16th at 7PM you can see the Pelillos de Culiacan show. There is no charge and the market will be set up in the Shrimp Park (Plaza del Camaron) where the Mermaid’s Market takes place. The last two Mermaid’s Markets will be in May so be sure to catch those.
Remember that our border closes at 8PM on the dot – whether you’re in line or not – those gates are closing! But next month we will have extended border hours around Memorial Day Weekend – the Friday and Monday so if you haven’t made your reservations…get on it! For other dates the border hours will be extended, look for the ad in this edition.
Happy Easter! Hope everyone has a safe and fun Semana Santa.
