Shipmates, this is it. Cap’n Greg is sailing off into the sunset.
After more than 20 years of writing contrived advice and other nonsense for the Rocky Point Times, this is my last hurrah. I am calling it quits with this issue.
My pro bono column has provided some interesting benefits. The notoriety of always wearing a yachting cap has resulted in my being directed to the front of highway checkpoints, and more than once, I have been allowed to continue on my way without a ticket after an officer of the law recognized me from the photo in the Times.
For those of you who bought me drinks even though I wouldn’t sell you my hat, I thank you from the bottom of my liver.
I especially want to express my gratitude to the wonderful, one-of-a-kind, crazy lady and newspaper owner/editor, Sandy O’Hare, for agreeing to let me grace the pages of this publication so long ago, even though hubby Tom O’Hare was not all that excited about it. Sadly, both have passed, and with them a bit of what made Peñasco so special for me and countless others in the early years. When daughter Lannette took over the reins, I continued my irreverent blathering without a pause. She’s a good person and provides a solid source of info to newcomers and old salts alike. And a special muchas gracias to General Manager Alicia Grajeda’s forever sunny outlook and her hard work to keep me on deadline all these years.
Even without my witty wordplay (CHOKE! COUGH!) I will still enjoy the sun, sand, and sea that brought me here in the first place. I urge your continued support of this paper and its advertisers, and I hope some bright young writer steps into my size nine huaraches (the shoes, not the food) and enjoys being as silly as I have been. Looking back, I realize I wrote more than 200 columns, every one delivered on time, and at least several that were worth reading.
Qué lo pase bien, amigos. It’s been a fun run.
Cap’n Greg
