Greetings from all of us at Barb’s Dog Rescue! As spring arrives in Rocky Point, we’re reminded once again how special this community truly is—filled with generous hearts, helping hands, and people who care deeply about both their neighbors and the animals who share this beautiful place with us. This month’s article is dedicated to the residents, the businesses, and the organizations who step up and support our work to take dogs off the streets and, after healing their broken bodies and souls, give them a second chance at life.
*Clinica Esperanza/Compassion Without Borders– For a relatively small Sonoran city, we are blessed with big city-style resources! Esperanza offers free basic veterinary care, vaccines, and spay/neuter services for all local dogs. Beyond that, they often take in the suffering, sick innocent street dogs that have no human advocate, and make every effort possible to save their lives. Many dogs who are saved are fortunate enough to make their way back to CWOB’s home base in Santa Rosa, CA, where they are made available for adoption. We are eternally grateful for their partnership!
*Pets Salon– Your go-to groomer in Rocky Point! Caring and compassionate, and always available to groom our rescue dogs. From dogs who arrive matted and in need of relief to the dogs who need a spa day before meeting their new human families, Pets Salon takes wonderful care of our rescued sweethearts.
*Rocky Point’s pickleball community– This group of spunky, fun-loving sportsmen and women held a tournament at beautiful Encantame Towers back in February and dedicated the entirety of their registration fees (and more than $500 extra, thanks to their generosity) to Barb’s Dog Rescue. Encantame donated the use of their state-of-the-art courts (thank you, Keith Allen), and locals Joy Paul & Robert Burnstein organized the event. Local videographer and social media expert Frankie Santos caught all the action on camera, including the crowning of the champs and the presentation of their gift to Barb’s Dog Rescue, at the conclusion of the event.
*Cholla Bay Sportsmen’s Club– Each year, this group of Cholla Bay champs puts together a golf tournament and donates its proceeds to Barb’s Dog Rescue. This year’s “Easy Eighteen” tournament on April 11th will be held at Islas Del Mar and is open to the public (but space is limited, so register soon). Your $100 registration fee includes lunch and a mystery gift, and there will be some fun raffles. Bring a bag of dog food (or donate 20$) to be eligible for the raffle! Contact the event chairman, Kathy, at 638-382-5185 to get registered.
*Banditos Cantina– Not only is this a super fun place to hang out for a great cocktail, a delicious meal, and the twice-yearly Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers festivals, but they are also dog lovers (especially our big softie, Waylon). They are wonderful friends and kindly open up their venue several times each year to help raise awareness for Barb’s Dog Rescue. On April 18th, they’ll be hosting us for a dog food drive and adoption event. BDR goes through about 100 bags of dog food each week – we need food donations badly, and hope that you’ll come see us with a bag or two of dog food in hand, and be ready for a good time, Banditos style!
*Rocky Point Scramble– These folks know how to have a good time! If you’re up for some fun with some golf mixed in, sign up for the Celebrity Scramble, happening on May 9th! Registration for your four-person team ($600/team) includes cart rental and range balls, prizes for 1st, 2nd, and “most honest” group, and there’s no extra charge for the shenanigans! A hole in one will make you the most popular person at the afterparty (there’s a big prize), and every dollar raised will be donated to our beautiful dogs, who rely on us to love and care for them while they wait for their forever families. We’ll have a fine-looking, fun-loving group of canine heroes on site for the event, as long as it isn’t too hot.
*Jesse’s Carreta– Visit Jesse’s for the best Piña Colada in Rocky Point, and meet the man who is driven by his love for food, and also by his love for animals. Meet his menagerie of rescued animals and give him a hug from all of us at Barb’s Dog Rescue. He is a staunch supporter of our work and proudly displays our logo on his staff shirts. Jesse is a Rocky Point treasure!
