Throughout the 2023 Season we will be introducing you to some of our “Mermaids” (what we call our artists & vendors). We hope that you enjoy meeting them here. Then, stop by the Mermaid’s Market and discover their Treasures!

~ Russ and Naomi Black

Carlota Blanco @ Peñasco T-Shirt

Participating at the Mermaid’s Market: 4 years

Name something about the Mermaid’s Market that you enjoy: Greet or hug customers who eventually become friends.

Do you create/make everything that you sell? No. I paint on clothes and on canvas. However, the items of clothing are made in Guadalajara and Mexico City.

How long have you lived in Puerto Peñasco? I was born here in 1975.

What is something you like about living here? The Sea and its people!

Tell us something “interesting” about yourself: I am an entrepreneur and I love what I do! I reflect this in my painting.

Do you have any other business location, or do you sell online? Yes! My boutique/shop location is Benito Juarez #51 Peñasco T-Shirt (on your left as you go in towards the Malecon)

Mary Robson @ Serenity Knitting by Maria de la Playa

Participating at the Mermaid’s Market: 5 or more years

Name something about the Mermaid’s Market that you enjoy: I love the camaraderie with the other vendors. We really have become a family that I treasure.  Likewise, many customers have become good friends. I appreciate so the opportunity Russ and Naomi have provided us.

Do you create/make everything that you sell? Everything but one item (drink covers from China.)

How long have you lived in Puerto Peñasco? We built in 2005 and retired here full time in 2013.

What is something you like about living here? Of course, the climate! Also, the joyfulness of the Mexican people! So many opportunities for good food, good friends, and good times!

Tell us something “interesting” about yourself: As a social worker and educator, I dedicated myself to improving the lives of families affected by serious mental illness. But this work can take its toll, so upon retirement I knew I craved serenity. My mother had taught me to knit, so I returned to knitting serenity shawls plus other things to give me peace and provide my customers and friends with comfort.

Do you have any other business locations where customers can find items? No.

People can call or email me with orders. I prefer to sell at the Market and by word of mouth.

Leticia Antonio Gumecindo @ Oscar y Leticia

How long have you lived in Puerto Peñasco? 30 years!

What is something you like about living here? The tranquility and the people.

Tell us something “interesting” about yourself: I started out as a beach vendor making necklaces and earrings from different stones.

Valerie Johnson @ Ravens Thicket

Participating at the Mermaid’s Market? 3 years

What do you enjoy about the Market? The camaraderie among the vendors – they are ready and willing to help each other. Many attendees come for the food and drink and just to look around, others are shoppers looking for unique items. Everyone is friendly and willing to strike up a conversation, making for a very pleasant atmosphere!

Do you create/make everything you sell? Yes! I make coasters, shells, wall art, and shelf sitters and table-top tableaus. I decoupage, silk screen and stencil… I create items using resin, air dry clay, sea- shells and wood.

How long have you lived in Puerto Peñasco? I have had a trailer in San Rafael Trailer Park since 2001, splitting my time between Puerto Peñasco and Tucson, Arizona.

What is something you like about living here? I enjoy the beach, and the culture – food, music, celebrations (especially Dia de los Muertos). I can sit on my deck and see the beach, hear the beach, watch the birds. Just relax.

Tell us something interesting about yourself: While I was working on my Bachelor’s Degree in Carbondale, Illinois, I owned a natural foods store, called Mr. Natural’s, as well as a stained glass business called Accents by Valerie. I created over 22 Tiffany style lamps for a bar there, and did a few craft shows selling windows and suncatchers. I left that behind when I moved to Tucson to finish my degrees. I am now a retired teacher and decided to take up my art again. I was so delighted to discover the Mermaid’s Market. It is the perfect place to sell my art!

Do you have any other business locations where customers can find items? I sell my art from my home studio in Tucson by appointment.

Do you sell online? I am designing a website (http://www.ravensthicket.com) and learning to use Etsy and Instagram. The easiest way to purchase online is from my Facebook page. You can message me and ask more questions about any item or ask me to create a unique piece for you. Facebook: Ravens Thicket

Tell us something interesting about yourself: We started this as a family dream. All of my family are in the food business, so I grew up in a restaurant environment and my kids did as well. But we never had our own until now! Thanks to the support of community of Rocky Point.

Do you have any other business locations? Yes. We are located at Guillermo Prieto no.38 between Sonora and Melchor Ocampo. Soon we will open our second location at the Tequila Factory – serving food and producing our homemade BBQ Tequila sauce.
